The PH we had in Tanzania needs to replace the stock on his Ruger M77 Matk II, RSM in 458 Lott.

He had broken his original when he literally batted away a wounded leopard that jumped out of the bushes at him. I gave him a replacement I had bought from Numerick some years earlier. Well he broke that also.

So he wants to order a strong composite Stock with a mercury tube recoil reducer. He asked where to order such a Stock a d that is not an area I know anything a out so looking to the forum for advice please.

I’ve had good luck/performance from McMillian stocks. They do a good job inletting them for the Model 70s I’ve had them done for. Not sure about the recoil reducers. Wouldn’t hurt to ask them.

Sounds like he’s definitely hard on stocks!
Hogue stocks seem indestructible to me, I pretty much abuse mine. Not sure about the recoil reducers though.
I have one on a Ruger Alaskan and a Remington 700.

I would look at Bell & Carlson or Hogue with a full bedding block.

McMillan seems to have become a real pain in the ass to deal with, I tried to get a stock for my BRNO 602 from them and was told it would be a 6 month wait to get the stock and it would be flat top only so I would have to find a stock maker that was willing to do 100% of the inletting.

The RSM has a slightly different recoil lug than the standard M77 so taking that into account I would order Bell & Carlson and aske them for their advice on having a gunsmith in Tanzania fit & bed it for him.

Before everyone complains about McMillan it is a different company now that Kelly sold it.

They got rid of the 150 SKUS in 500 action sizes, and are just building about 30-50 SKUS that means that when you order a stock you get in a few months not 18.

An RSM will not fit (as insetted) any existing stock currently made by anyone. A gunsmith will be able to inlet a rifle action into a stock.

What McMillan does for the uncommon SKUS is to sell them as un in letted flat tops.

They are 100% more on-time than they have been ever. But like everyone said, they do not do odd-ball inlets.

I do not remember what McMillan stock was on my RSM 416 20 years ago. It looked like a target stock, and the guy I bought it from said McMillan told them it was the only stock that would fit an RSM.

Was UGE!

Agreed it is a different company since it was sold with the new narrowed availability; however even before they were sold it wasn't exactly a picnic to get a stock from them; I remember waiting 9 months to get a stock for a M70 back in 2008.

Bell & Carlson on the other hand, had me a custom 15"LOP stock made and delivered within 2 weeks for my BRNO 602; then $100 to the gunsmith to glass bed it and I'm good to go.

Bell and Carlson is awesome!

Their version of the Harry Lawson thumbhole actually feels better than the McMillan Lazzeroni (also designed by Harry Lawson).

I don't have any idea what stock would fit.

I would sooner look into indestructible wood, either laminate or regional ironwood in Africa, since a gunsmith there is going to need to inlet it anyway...

I ordered two custom stocks from Bansner. The first was a carbon fiber, left hand for my M700 SPS in 22-250. They supplied the stock and it fits the rifle. I will epoxy bed it and paint it when the rest of the metal work is done. Delivery seemed timely for a custom stock.

The other is a LH M70 in 308 Norma Magnum with Brux barrel and Sunnyhill bottom metal. This I ordered as a finished rifle. It has been completed and I have been calling all week to arrange payment and delivery. A bit frustrating but I hope to sort this out NEXT week. Obviously I have not seen the rifle, but will post when I get it in hand.
