Ruger RSM .416 Rigby

For anyone interested there is a RSM .416 Rigby for sale now at Cabela's in Sidney, Nebraska for $1360!

sierraone, I saw it on Guns International. I've been looking for quite a while and tried several times to buy, but never quite struck the right deal. This one being NIB really set the hook. I was able to negotiate what I think is a fair deal, but I certainly didn't steal it.

Congrats..I know you won't be shooting that gun very much... I just added a Ruger Guide rifle in 375 Ruger...Sweet short thing....

Don't sweat it IdaRam, my GF is jealous of my 416 also, she thinks the barrel is too cold against her at night between us. Can't live with them and Rigby won't take em on trade! Lol

Wouldn't that be something if John Rigby Company would take them in on trade for a new Big Game! I guess we can wish and dream!

Well @sierraone, I have to admit I might even settle for something less grandiose than a Rigby! :E Frightened:
Heym and Searcy come immediately to mind...
If posts from me all of as sudden stop you all will know what happened :V Axe:

I take your last post to mean that you bought a Rigby or Heym or Searcy, and certain person in your life found out what it cost?
Speaking of Searcy, I saw a .470 N.E. in the leather case in Tulsa last year, no obvious marks on it, for $9000. More than I need to spend but I sure was tempted to pull out a credit card! Speaking of, will be headed back to the next Tulsa show in about 8 weeks.

Nope, sorry 'bout that (n) I didn't do a very good job of thinking and typing.
I meant if my girlfriend knew I said I would trade her in for less than a Rigby I may end up with a metal object stickin' outa my skull. She's a little touchy that way :D
That does seem like a really good price for that Searcy. I would have been mighty tempted too!

That's pretty much what I thought you said!

I think I am going to be in the same boat as you with the recoil. It will be interesting to see how tolerable it is. My .375 RSM is a joy to shoot, recoil is a total non-event even with stout loads. My .338 Win Mag and .300 WSM are both far more punishing to shoot, so maybe the Rigby won't be too bad. Planning to start pretty mild on the loads.

The recoil from the Rigby is gonna be a step up from your .375. Not bad but up.

Don't plan on shooting it a bunch at first. Work your way up slowly maybe 5 rounds the first few trips and shoot a small bore afterwards to keep the "flinchitis" at bay. Stay off the bench for a while too. Stand up and shoot off hand for a bit. After a while it'll be no big deal.

I personally like a scope on the Rigby, I use something around 2x7 variable, you will most likely need an offset ring mount from Ruger for that long an action and remeber to set it up for the most eye relief you can get.

.

Thanks Heym! I'm loving them RSM's :D
6 months 'til boots in African dirt! .375 is looking for Lioness blood this trip.

Man, am I ever with you Bullthrower! They really are what a rifle should be.
Mark Lang from Ruger is a friend and I have properly chastised him, although the RSM's were discontinued before his arrival. However, he did tell me they were tired of stuffing hundred dollar bills down the spout of every one they shipped. Sad, but true I guess. Hard to justify keeping a product in the line up that costs more to produce than you can sell it for :( Especially when you are a publicly traded company...
The same issue exists with their Red Label shotguns, only to a much lesser degree. Oh, and remember the the Ruger Gold Label? 2 years of production and then kaput. Bummer...

Rumor has it the RSM was a pet project of Bill Ruger's, something he always wanted to bring to market. Notice how many wonderful things Ruger did during Bill's final years, all the long lost and exotic chamberings brought to market? My opinion is that the man decided to let loose a little in his last years. And here we stand, benefactors of his good will.

Ok guys I need some help.... Just which models and calibers are we all talking about that Bill Ruger did such a great job on? I may need to expand my young collection!

Less than 2 years ago I bought a first Ruger for my wife. A Guide Gun in 30-06.. with the stock spacers out it fit her well and she shot 4 nice PG critters last April with it and it functioned flawlessly.... so bought her a 375 Ruger version of the same gun... That one had a few feeding issues but it is wearing in and working ok. along with that I ordered a 6.5 Creedmoor Predator with the 2 stage trigger to replace a Savage... The Savage with accustock and accutrigger was a great shooter and took 3 springuck, a bushbuck and a red hartebeest with it.. I really like the caliber for small stuff but respect it enough I would use it on a kudu if presented the opportunity and it was in my hands. However I hated the push feed and especially in that particular action. So traded it for the Ruger. That first one I could not get on paper at 25 yards with a Z5 3.5-18 x44. The good folks at Ruger customer service told me to send it back and soon called and told me they were sending out a new gun... Been breaking it in slowly and last Sunday I had the wife spotting for me and at 100 yards she was telling me the bullets were making one hole.

In the mean time I became aware of the RSM through this board and all the good folks on here, especially IdaRam... Then walked into Cabela's and saw a 416 Rem Mag I though was an RSM, the Cabel's guy had no idea but looked some up and it sure looked right, he gave me a 10 day return option and I bought it... loved it! Now I have a 458 Lott version on the way. And shopping for more! Gonna need a 375 and found one but it is buggered up with magna porting so have to pass on that one. I also found a 270 but seems pricey at $2000. What else is there? And what other models are particularly good ones that might have come out of Bills Legacy building?

Thanks for the shout out Bob :) I enjoy talking guns with you.
OK, since you asked :D If this gets me in trouble with a certain little lady, you are going to have to take the heat ;)
Starting on the easier end of the spectrum, everyone ought to have a Red Label in their collection. Or better yet, a few of them. I have a very early production gun and would really like to add one of the stainless guns to the collection. They were made in 12 ga, 20 ga and 28 ga, as well as a stainless steel synthetic waterfowl version. Discontinued for a while and re-introduced last year. And now re-discontinued again I guess...
Next up, the Gold Label. IIRC these were only produced for 2 or 3 years. I REALLY want one of these, but they aint cheap. SXS double, I think they were only produced in 12 ga and were available with either a pistol grip stock or a straight english stock. If you can find one I think they're going for about $4K and up.
A Hawkeye .256 single shot pistol is a highly desirable addition to a collection. Tough to find and probably at least a couple grand and up. It was produced back in the 60's and very few made due to lack of commercial success. Still a unique design and I would love to have one of these as well.
Another one to add is the Model 44. Semi-auto carbine in .44 mag, not terribly expensive or difficult to find, but one in nice shape is a great addition to a collection. Damn fun to shoot pigs with too :)
So there's a start that will easily lighten your wallet by a five figure number :D

Lets not forget a three screw Blackhawk and a original Redhawk. They would compliment the 44 carbine well.

I just made a quick scan of Gunbroker and Guns Int and found several Ruger .44 mag rifles. Prices varied from 499 to 1500. Some had a lot of rust, and 1500 is way to much for that gun in my opinion, even though it was in very good condition. It was a popular deer gun in the south in the late 60s when I was a teenager. They are out there though! Start your "new" gun hunt!

IdaRam,
You are killing me! I forgot all about the Hawkeye .256 until now. They are a damn site more than I remember them bringing...3K. That was a neat idea they had, forming that case might be an absolute nightmare though.

I'm going to need a couple more safes, and a bigger house. Think I'll concentrate on the rifles for now. However the Blackhawk, Redhawk and shotguns sound mighty tempting.....
