Ruger no1

The No 1 stock has too much drop at the comb for use with a heavy caliber, at least for me. A properly designed stock would go a long way in taming recoil.
Has anyone re-stocked a 375 this way and how much difference did it make? I am considering a new stock for aesthetic reasons, but adding height, a cheek piece and a thicker pad may all be worth it. It's just a 375 and although not brutal recoil, the less the better - why take a kicking if you don't have to?

I find the rifle recoils rapidly with full .458 Lott loads. It's not necessarily the thump that gets you, but the zero to 21m/s that causes alarm. It's just so bloody fast in the hands. This alarm can be worked through, but I have not fired the rifle regularly enough to see this yet. I believe if I fired it twice a week I could see my way to ten very good rounds. I think a person could develop a tolerance for fifteen to twenty rounds a day spread out. The barrel will burn the hands by eight rounds of sustained fire. Maybe I need to make one of those BPCR blow tubes for my Lott.

My slim experience of a Ruger No1 is with a 416 Rigby. It kicked like a mule ! Comparatively I shot a 416 Rigby in a Winchester M70. With some apprehension I stepped up to the mark. We were shooting clays at 100yds on the range.
I’m glad to say there was a world of difference ! As previously mentioned it may have something to do with stock design.

Finally got a chance to take my 450/400 No1 out yesterday for a test run, and let’s just say, off the sticks the recoil was a little on the eye opening side. This rifle is the “D” profile barrel, so that adds extra heft, but what would be the easiest way for a bit of heft? Some lead in the forarm and butt stock?

This was also the first time shooting anything over .375, so I do realize there is also a learning curve associated with the bump up in size.

Stick with it and it gets easier. Might also make up some reduced 'practice loads' to build confidence and familiarity with the rifle. When I first started firing my .404J It seemed like a beast. Now it seems powerful, but not beastly.

With a generous Pachmyr Decelerator recoil pad and below max loads, it will be much better.

Mike is right, just shoot it a couple of times per trip until you start to get used to it. I would second the decelerator pad and possibly consider a mercury cylinder. If you do go with the mercury cylinder, take it out for hunts. No sense lugging the extra weight and the legality of traveling internationally with a cylinder of mercury would be an interesting question.

This is what I did with my .458 Lott. It works well. Of course, your journey may be different.

Dont feel too bad. I had one a few years ago and found the recoil anything but "gentle"! After a few rounds of factory loads I would get a headache and have to quit.
I later sold it off and bought a CZ 550 in .404 Jeffrey, same round without the rim, and found it much easier to shoot and no headache.
Mine had the lighter C barrel.
If you plan to shoot it much I echo the above on having it fit with a much better recoil pad. Rugers pads on the heavies are almost worthless, wish someone would clue them in on that!

@Kevin Peacocke I have restocked several #1's to get the fit correct for me. The largest I currently have is a 450/400 and it's recoil is very manageable.

I built one years ago in 500 NE from a 375 doner #1, it was fairly easy to shoot when you kept the loads at the 570gr at 2150 or less. When you pushed the velocity above 2200-2300 it got a bit more sporty. The 470 with proper stock fit and a GOOD recoil pad and you will be fine.

I wonder how people tell the difference between the C and D weight barrels? I do this by lining them up side by side. Is there a wonderful book or resource that tells us this? I believe the .404 was cut with a nonstandard chamber and they were on the C weight barrel. It's possible the .450-.400 were also built on this barrel.

If you’re going to have one made up, why stop at a .470 NE? ;)

They've been "re-engineered" in 500 NE, and more; I'm thinking (AGAIN!, because I have most of the components) of the 366DGW, Judson Bailey's brainstorm; 416 Rigby necked down to 9.3mm. Mercury recoil reducer in the butt might help ...
