Ruger No. 1

This will be the year I finally pick up a Ruger No. 1. I have mulling it over for the better part of a decade. The problem I am having might be common to the uninitiated, what cartridge do I get it in. I am currently looking at 300 HH, 416 Rigby, 450/400. Currently I am looking online, but there is a gun show this weekend that is pretty good so there is no telling on what will be there. I would appreciate any input from owners of these fine rifles. I also reload everything I own so ammo would not be to much of an issue. Thanks.

Welcome to AH Chris. I used to own a Tropical model in 375H&H. I now own one in 30-06. They are fine rifles, they shoot as good as they look.

I have a .275 Rigby. The No 1 is a good fit for the .275. Mine is extremely accurate.

The stock design is not particularly well designed for heavy calibers. They tend to get your attention.

I have a 1A in 270 Win and a 1B in 223 Rem. Both are sweet shooters, but I'm not sure if I'd like one in one of the heavy calibers. Others seem to like them, though.

I would ask what are you planning to use it for? I have an RSI in 7x57 and it is a great rifle for whitetails and black bear.

Great question. I have several, favorite guns by far, I own none of the heavy hitters but they just damn fine and fun firearms

I’ll probably use it on bears on up. But I would like to get in an odd caliber that you do not normally see.

I have 3 of these rifles I've collected over the years; a 450-400, a 375 H&H, and a 458 Lott. All really accurate rifles. My son shot a bison with the Lott. Dropped it with one shot.

I have a .375 H&H and a Lott. The .458 has the best supply of practice bullets. The .416 is cool. How about 9.3x74?

You are correct. I had one but sold it to an AH member as I bought a Rigby in 9.3x62 as well.

I have a .458 Lott and a #3 in .45/70. I’ve also owned a .375 H&H and one I had rebarreled to .340 Wby. All accurate and reliable.

Get one in the caliber you will use the most. Personally I would go for the queen of the 30s. The 300 H&H.

We'll get one in 35 Whelen and load it to its FULL potential. Good for 99% of game.

STILL won't match the 9.3x64 that Rob B built for me ...
