Ruger No 1 Stock Project

So, do you free float the forend from the barrel also, or full contact of the barrel? I have always had full contact on face of receiver then either had set screw off hanger to barrel and bedded the hangerto forend and free floated the rest of the barrel. The other way I have done it to do what you did and then pillor bed the action off of it, or a block. I have several different single shots done in different ways. Always willing to learn a new one though. I have thought of a wedge done off a.block that the forend is bedded on, would be neat to try also. I prefer a small splinter forend, so less problems then the big massive stock ones though, so less issues.
To state the obvious, Ruger no 1's as they come from the factory are free-floated from the receiver due to the rather ingenious (I think) hanger. Mine of course is not because of the modifications that I've made. As you've already indicated, the purpose of the angled forend screw is to draw the stock tight to the front of the receiver. Mine does the same only the attachment point was changed from the hanger to the barrel but the forend is still drawn towards the receiver.

I've done nothing the the forend itself other that enlarge the barrel channel to accept the new barrel. It repeatedly shoots cloverleafs or better at 50 yards with proper bullets but we are talking 1/2" holes here. I believe the accuracy is more due to the large, stiff barrel than anything else but I have no way of validating that other than my belief that a stick of wood attached to the bottom would have zero affect on this beast.

Not related to the stock project but directly related to the rifle. I had a throating reamer made because I needed a bit more case capacity for monolith bullets. That throating work was completed today. This is the dummy round of what I was striving for; COAL = 3.36". In hindsight I should have polished it up pretty.

500 nitro, or 50-140 sharps?

I fell into some 50-140 brass, not sure what I'm going to build it on yet.

Had "The Beast" to the range for the first round of testing after the rework on the throat; still shoots great! This target was killed by 575gr Peregrine VRG-2's fired from my 500 Sharps Ruger No 1, average 2074fps still with room to grow. I cheated a bit and mounted it's AimPoint H30L.

I just saw Budsgunshop.com has both the guide gun and the African for $1150. FWIW - I bought both and decided to use the Guide gun - I restocked it in a Bell and Carlson stock and I added the Alaska arms floor plate to add a round. I wanted the shorter barrel as I will use a suppressor. I wont go lower than $1100, but I will ship it and no sales tax.

Let me know if you are interested
