Ruger No.1 As and reloads for the .35 Whelen

LT Backstrap, I reload for several different 35 Whelen(s). Normally I use IMR 4064. As mentioned, Speer Hot Core make cheap practice rounds and are more than adequate for deer hog and small bear. All three of the Whelen(s) I load for have been to Africa and acquitted themselves well, however I did use better bullets. IMHO the 35 Whelen is very much underappreciated especially when loaded to its' full potential. Rifles were / are a Sporterized Remington 03- A3, a Remington 700, and a TC Encore. BTW Hornady's 200 Gr. SST Superformance loads will get your attention.
I also use IMR 4064. My preferred bullet has always been 250gr. Kodiak bonded bullets (made in Alaska), but as they are no longer available (I bought up the last of them directly from the manufacturer before he passed), I will likely switch to Swift A-Frames when I run out.

Should have read
@CoElkHunter is usually at the airport or train station when his ship comes in and misses all the good deals
Ha! Ha! Actually, I'm usually asleep (work nights) by the time these guys on here pop up out of bed and post something on the classifieds here. By the time I browse the classifieds when I awake from my slumber, the item(s) are long gone. I snooze and lose and it sucks to be me! Start posting stuff at midnight! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Anyone reload for the Ruger No. 1 A Sporter in .35 Whelen? It's the middle one in the picture of my beloved trio of No.1s. Top one is a 7x57 and bottom is a 6.5x55. The .35 Whelen likes the 200 and 250 factory Remington Core-Lokts. I have a variety bullets from the Hornaday 200 Gr., Nosler Partitions and Accubonds in 225 Gr. and 250 Gr. A variety of powders from RL-15, Varget, and IMR 4320. Not looking to harvest dump trucks, just whitetail and hogs. Happy New Year to all.View attachment 444413
That’s a great looking group of Rugers

LTBackstrap, hunting hogs with a 6.5 X 55 is like a marriage made in heaven. All of my rifles in that caliber are Swedish Mausers. IMHO a grand old caliber in a grand old rifle.
Yes and I think you have a monopoly on the Swedish Mausers!:)

Lorded up some Hornady 160 Gr. round nose interlocks with RL-19, they were devastating on them, very impressed.

All of the hogs I've taken with the 6.5 X 55 were with 140 Gr. bullets namely Nosler Partitions. I scored some factory Norma 156 Gr. at a "close out" for what I thought was a bargain i.e. $22.60 a box. I have two of my Swedes sighted in with them. I went looking for some to reload, it took several years but now I have a couple of hundred Norma 156(s) and a similar amount of Woodleigh 160(s). I'm saving the heavier bullets for the "bigger" stuff. God, I love this caliber!!

It's a nifty old caliber for sure. I have a bolt action that shoot the 140 gr. Accubonds in, it really likes those. I go with the old school heavy 160s for the No. 1. Love those Nosler partitions, shoot a lot of those in a lot of calibers.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
