Ruger No.1 "460 Weatherby"

Your real question was whether this was a reasonable conversion. It may well have the original bbl, just having been rechambered as both shoot 458 bullets. Ruger #1 will handle massive cartridges. I have one in 378 Wby....which is the same case as 460 and it is fine. Or it could have been rebbl'd...........The change in twist rate and bbl length will not make much difference. Actually have had two 378's and the one in the Ruger is still for sale. It is a tack driver, and a great long range elk gun. Perspective buyers that have shot it, for some reason, did not buy it....go figure.........FWB

No, the 460 certainly is not necessary as it would never see a hunt or rarely used. However, I've been on the #1 search in 458 Lott for so long, its come to well, why not? .. The #1 H's are imo, one of the finest looking & fitting firearm I've known. Highly regret not capitalizing on them through the decades. Bidding on one right now, we'll see...
I agree with you, they are fine looking rifles.
However I will caution, as others have said, the 460WBY kills on both ends.
Possibly exercise a little patience and keep looking for a 458WM or LOTT.
Good luck with whichever you decide to choose.
Gonna need a video of you shooting the 460WBY for the first time.

This gun has been rechambered. Look carefully at the mill work on the barrel. It's right over the original chambering site. I'm just a details nerd...

Like to see what picture you are looking at.
I'd be all about it, but let's make sure we are all talking about the same firearm.
The OP didn't post any pictures.

Follow the GB link and look at the left hand side pictures. Zoom in. You'll see a curious oval shaped flat on the barrel where the .458 Win Mag used to be. They milled the old chambering away and stamped the new one. It's not all that clear, but I have seen this once before on a rechambered rifle from .458 to .450 3¼.

Nice catch.
When I looked at it, it seemed to say "450" with something after it.
Like you said, it's not that clear.

Your hunt for a No 1 in 458 Lott is on par with mine for a uncut/unmodified 257 Roberts in a No 1 so I feel for you.

A #1 in .460 Weatherby....... Prediction?.......painnnnnn

.458 Lott went for some serious money. Wow. I have one too and I'll be treating it nicely like the $3800 rifle it apparently is. Although mine is fitted with express sights...makes it even rarer...LOL

.460 Wby sold for just $1400. A deal...I guess...probably a Lott and then some to deal with...

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
