Ruger M77 MKII Safari Magnum in 458 Lott

Captain Munro, that is a seriously great price on a NIB Ruger Magnum .458 Lott.

The wood on this is nicer than the one I sold a couple years ago, due to Covid. As stated in my earlier posts, it is the best handling of the 3 calibers.

I wouldn't think too long on this. I looked at the 2 Gunbroker postings, would not consider the rusty one, the $2850 one does not have as nice wood, and this one is pristine for only $350 more and NIB!

Bump for Krish and a really fine rifle.
Yeah, I would guess it only goes up in value from here. I'm seriously considering it, but I have to see what the boss says....

I currently live 2 miles SW of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, but am from the Opelousas/Church Point area of Acadia Parish.

I see you live in Slidell. I drive through Slidell about every other week to meet with clients in Alabama.
Perhaps we could meet one day for coffee?

Yeah, an Louisian AHF meeting! I've lived in the Dell for about 6 years now originally from PA. Incidentally, Krish is from around St Louis where I just drove through and have applied to a job there recently.

Ruger RSMs are the pick of the bunch in the Ruger Big Bores

Rare to see them for sale as most lads take them to grave

Below is not written to scare you but more for info transfer and make lads aware.

I’ve never seen a fired RSM that didn’t have an issue

Few things to consider

Being a Mauser Clone they have inherent issues with stock cracking

Most times through tang recess and recoil lug recess reinforcement area

As a general rule I run through this list of improvements to aid

Longevity
Functionality
Usability

Fit Cross bolts 2 or 3 depending on cartridge size and stock grain etc
Cross bolts need to be epoxied in and torqued to at least 25 inch pounds

Many of the factory fitted cross bolts I’ve seen were loose or had failed in place with no outward sign

Relieve the tang is a must !!!!!

Has to have a business card gap at rear of tang and also at start of action just before the rear receiver ring where the tang joins

The RSMs have a funny steel strap that connects the action recoil lug to a bolt through stock further forward along forend

Most times the bolt splits stock if left in place

Most times this assembly is removed and a Second recoil lug is fitted,
a must on large bores

Rounding the reward corners of the recoil lug/s is a good thing as well
Just stops any sharp corners from crack starting

Although bedding doesn’t strengthen the stock it does allow the recoil lug/s to bare evenly and transfer the recoil force through the stock
Also can aid in accuracy

Bed action & second recoil lugs

Action screw torque is paramount
In inch pounds
95 front - crazy
45 rear

Optional Extras -

Fit action screw pillars

Although these don’t strengthen the stock they do limit top to bottom compression of the stock if fitted correctly

Polish & Ceracoate follower & extractor
Micro slick bolt body
Will reduce action noise and grainy feel

Recoil reducers in butt depending on Shooters ability, the cartridge and balance.
Reducers are selected for balance and fitted correctly

Fit a 30mm KickEze recoil pad to your length of pull or even 1/4" longer

Enlarge master hand side stock Flute if you have man hands

Etc etc

That is a thoughtful and interesting list of things to know/fix. Does anyone know a gunsmith that works on RSMs for the issues listed?

Hi Krish,
Do you know anyone who makes a synthetic stock for the old Ruger (tang safety) .458 lott.
The tang safety model was in 458 Winchester. Unless someone re-chambered one.

I read on another forum that only about 8000 Ruger Safari Magnums were built in the 19 years they were un production. Not sure if that is just for the magnum version or if it includes the express models.

Hello Captain Munro,

Mr. Pete ### is a gunsmith/gunmaker I know and have used several times. Top notch work. He has a shop in Baton Rouge, but right now he is in Namibia, hosting clients, and hunting till late August.

I had an RSM .458 Lott, an awesome weapon. He can sort it out for you, with stock work, and glass bedding if needed.

PM me for details.

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
