Ruger 35 Whelen Range Report

The speer 250s are only running avg 2360fps. Varget 55gr. Spread of 50, std dev 18. Speer does not list varget but i based it on others data and worked from 51 up to 55. I dont think the speer bullet wants to run much faster. They are accurate enough for my shooting needs. I just got 300 hornady 300gr interlocks that I think will run better. Maybe. I just started on 35 whelen about a month ago.
Varget probably not ideal for heavier 35 whelen bullets but I have it. My friend has cfe 223 powder at his shop. Maybe i should try some.
@professor
With the heavies like the 310 in the Whelen you will need H4350 to make it sing.

Forgit the TTSX fer deer. Expensive bullet that may be a bit hard for soft little Bambi
Just stuck with a nice 225 gn cup and core.
You will find you get more emphatic kills on smaller game like deer. The 225 gn Sierra spbtgk is a good bullet. Loaded with a healthy dose of cfe223 I get 2,880fps in my Whelen. Shoots flat enough out to 400 and plenty of power.

You don’t need a “bear load” to kill deer. Midwest (USA) deer in particular aren’t that hard to kill.

That’s why for deer camp I download my .350 Rem Mag to .35 Rem velocities and usually use a lighter bullet (e.g., 180grn) or a hard-cast at the same moderate velocity.

The TSSX is a great big and/or dangerous critter bullet, so save them for those species. Deer are dropped every year even by pistol bullets and at pistol velocities.

But I get it …. I know a couple of guys who always bring their custom .375 H&H mags to deer camp. They've concluded that making it to Africa at this point in their lives probably isn’t in the cards.

So before they die they want to be able to say they killed something with their …. investments. Deer, hogs, ground squirrels, whatever.

My one uncle has been hunting with a Remington 700 in 35 Whelen since the 70s. He does not reload, but did keep all the brass. I will hit him up and start loading.
@Captain Munro
You will have fun.
You can go from mild with cast pistol for fun up to full power bone crunching power.

I agree with you. But I don’t reload at the moment and the TTSX is my preferred factory option. The factory cor-locks are like $80 a box vs $55 for the TTSX. I’m just not willing to pay $80 for Remington cor-lock otherwise I’d take that bullet deer hunting.

That's crazy ridiculous. I have to agree on your choice based on price.
You may have to start reloading so you can tailer make loads to what to need.
The 220 gn Speer is a good cheep bullet for general use or if'n y'all want to reach out try the 225gn Sierra game king btsp.
The 225gn Woodleigh PPSP is a fantastic bullet and should be available soon in the USA

I used to reload, and I plan to reload again someday. I still have all my equipment. But I have two young kids and no space to set up a reloading bench. So at this point I have to prioritize my free time and right now reloading gets the boot. But hopefully in a few years and can start back up again.

Kids sleep and they make foldable reloading benches.
My mate was in the same boat so he reloads after the kids are in bed for a couple of hours to de-stress
