Extremely Disappointed – Unprofessional and Unreliable dealings with Robert Utne / Wild Images In Motion

I rarely leave negative reviews, but after nearly three years of frustration, financial loss, and dealing with the sheer unprofessionalism of Robert Utne and Wild Images In Motion, I feel compelled to share our experience to prevent others from going through the same ordeal.

We entrusted this business with several valuable animal hides and skulls, along with thousands of dollars in deposits. What followed has been a continuous string of missed deadlines, lack of communication, and subpar work.

Communication has been abysmal. Calls, emails, and text messages routinely go unanswered for weeks or months. When responses do arrive, they are filled with excuses, blame-shifting, and empty promises. Deadlines are missed repeatedly, with no explanation or attempt at resolution.

The quality of work has been shockingly poor. Several of the tanned hides returned to us were covered in mold, a clear sign of improper care. One completed mount had the wrong horns attached, and another was so poorly done that we had to pay another taxidermist to correct and finish it. In every case, Robert Utne took zero responsibility for the mistakes or damage.

To make matters even worse, three of our animals remain missing, and we have received no updates, explanations, or accountability. Despite numerous requests for clarity or documentation, we have been met with silence.

As if this wasn't enough, our research has uncovered multiple legal issues surrounding Robert Utne and his business. He has multiple convictions with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Enforcement Division for failure to maintain proper commercial records. Additionally, we found several judgments against him in Conciliation Court, all stemming from similar disputes and complaints from others.

I've personally spoken with numerous other customers who have had nearly identical experiences—unkept promises, poor-quality work, and missed deadlines. They, too, have been left in the dark. This is not an isolated incident; it's a disturbing pattern of behavior that has been allowed to continue unchecked.

I am not sharing this review seeking sympathy. I am sharing it because I do not want anyone else to suffer the frustration, disappointment, and financial loss that we have.

If you are considering trusting Robert Utne or Wild Images In Motion with your taxidermy trophies, I strongly urge you to think twice. With his troubling track record, lack of professionalism, and numerous legal issues, it’s clear that this is a business you want to avoid at all costs.

Thanks for sharing. Seems the Yelp reviews are also abysmal

It's posted many times do your taxidermy here instead of Africa so you have a recourse if something goes south. In this case it looks like "Good luck with that".

I know very few taxidermists who aren’t flaky or down right frauds
I never leave any antlers or horns with them , only leave the hide and then bring them the horns or antlers when they get close to completion
Otherwise they seem to disappear, drag their feet or lose the animal , or go bankrupt

Taxidermist is in Savage, MN not Africa.

Out of interest didn't you check the business/him out before using him?....seems like after the fact you easily found all this info....
HI Spike.t This guy was referred to me by someone I trusted at the time. I accept my part for doing my own research. My goal here is that no one else has to deal the B.S. this guy has put us through.

I will absolutely be having future work done in Africa. I will also encourage others to do the same.

This guy specializes in exotics and African game. He also was very involved with SCI until he apparently was booted from the MN chapter.

Welcome to AH.

We are generally hesitant / critical of new members joining with a negative review as a first post. For all we know you may be a disgruntled former employee or.... worse an anti hunter....

That said, the online reviews of the shop are not very flattering to say the least...

So, please post some pics of your unsatisfactory taxidermy if you have any. Tell us more about your trophies, where they came from, what you expected, and where you are in the process to "make it right"

You got some attention and we are listening....

This is the golden wildebeest I shot and this is the completed shoulder mount. This is not my animal that he gave me.

Poor job of tucking this lip and stretching this hide. Unacceptable work from a so-called expert.

Moldy hides, this was one of them that they likely can salvage. Others went in the trash.

My question is did you inspect the dip n pack when he received it. A lot can go wrong on the African side of things.

My taxidermist here in the US wouldn't even open the crate without me being there to see that everything was alright.

If doesn't excuse bad workmanship, but the question there is did you visit his shop to see a example of his work?

I did, he has done a few mule deer for us in the past

I agree that is clearly not the same wildebeest.

Who was your outfitter? And who handled the trophies on the Africa side?
I did get a box of horns and skulls from his shop last week. In the box was a wildebeest skull. As I inspected it, I noticed it said Scott N golden wildebeest. I would guess he put my horns for my blue wildebeest on it. He took no accountability when I questioned him on it. Some Expert!!!!
