Rifle On Gunbroker

I recently purchased this rifle which I guess is some what of a mix of new and old school. I thought I was being adventurous just because it had an aperture sight with it and the scope didn't have finger adjustable turrets. Looks like I'm gonna have to step my game up here

I'm gonna say that a Pic rail machined into the receiver and a good, and I mean good like a SPHUR mount has got to be better than that business. I mean I know that is not exactly comparing apples to apples. Then again I have not handled one of those mounts, and I know that the Mauser type actions since not originally designed to mount a scope present thier own challenges in finding a place to attach the mounts where they don't interfere with the function, but I would definitely be curious about thier degree of repeatability and also the crazy amount of height over bore with no way to secure a proper cheek weld

Nice to see another AI fan.

I have spent the last 12+years behind one, I believe 8 barrels on my first AIAX.

I have an AT with 4 I think one is a 7 SAW from Clayton at West Texas Ordnance and had an AIAX in 338 lapua and man they are absolute hammers. Killed a bear at 570yds with that 338. Lord they are heavy though if you pack one in the mountains

Yes sir 1- AX 6XC, 1-AXMC short action 308, and 1- AX in 338. All but the 308 are topped with Gen II razors. NX8 4X32 on the 308 for now.

I don't have any affiliation with these guys but I had forgot that I put this in my watch list. It looks like a heck of a rifle and might be a good deal. I'm sure some of y'all that know more than me about this type rifle can look at it and comment here. I just thought I'd give every body a heads up on this one in case somebody was looking for something like this.

@Backyardsniper
Seems awfully expensive for a,30 ought six. Yes it is nice but realisticly how often would it see a hunting scenario.

@Backyardsniper right there with you on pic rails, though I am more utilitarian. I was just at the range and sighted in an old Vortex HST in a Warne ramp mount and clicked out to 400 yards on an LMT upper. Then, popped that off and sighted in a 4x32 acog (Larue base), just shot that out to 200. Popped that back off and back to the HST, perfect return to zero at 400, back to the Acog, same return to zero.

Point being; torque wrench and 2 minutes and I can have a quality scope mount at sub $200 have correct height, return to zero, and no gunsmith wait and multiple optic options. I've done similar with NF rails on my Rem 700 and Warne rings on my cz550. Sure, the claw mounts are elegant and classy, but not as practical for the majority, especially should you have a failure and need to swap scopes. Which, I had baggage handlers damage a scope amd had to do a swap in the field in RSA, another reason I'm in the practical camp on mounts. I dont want to wait 1 week let alone one year for a scope to be mounted, but that's just me.

Today's precision machined integral rails are light years ahead of that cluster*(**k Rube Goldberg scope mount that's not only ridiculously expensive but limited to who can install and repair it. As far as repeatability, here's one demo with a rail mounted scope.

Back in the day the NXS5.5X22 was the shit! You could not find a better scope for the money. Optics have improved tremendously in the last decade. I have several Nightforce scopes all in the NX8 line FFPs. They again are good for the money, glass is on the upper end of mid-level. It is not in the same league as S&B, TT, Hensoldt (best glass I have ever had), I have not owned a ZT it's hard for me to buy one of those when I can buy 2 Gen II razors for the same price.

I have a 5.5-22 8-32and 3-15 all NF. I have has a couple US optic but didn't love them. What's your thoughts on the S&B and Hensoldt as far as are they so much better than the NF that it's worth paying the difference. All my scopes current are NXS but I want a NX8 and a buddy of mine just got one. You can be at get 2 NF for the price of one Schmidt. Are the Schmidt's that much better/worth the extra $$

absolutely. Over 3 grand, you can buy some of the finest 30-06 rifles ever made. Factory Sako and an $800 scope?

Yeah I'm with you there. I bought that Sako Arctos for $2750 with 250pc of brass and 7 boxes of hornady 150 spire point projectiles and a Swaro 3.5-10 in the QD mounts and an Aperture sight to go with it. I thought that was a decent deal. Those guns retail for around $2500 when you can find them. Plus I really wanted to use a 30/06 with an Aperture for some of.my plainsgame. Kinda got that Hemingway vibe.

do what you will with your money, but don’t say it has a Hemingway vibe.

A Hemingway vibe would be built on a pre64 or Mauser action. (Maybe even a Springfield) It would have a Paul Jager, claw, or G&H mount. It would be hand built. It would be made by Lindner, Biesen, Sedgley, Niedner, Shelhammer, Hoffman, and others. It would have been retailed by Von Lengerke, Griffin, Or Abercrombie.

Never been a fan of USOs I like the idea but glass and reliability were not their #1.

S&B I had 5, 4 - 5X25 PMll and one 4X16PMll. Glass is awesome. Was able to see bullet holes in the target at 600 yards, so resolution was phenomenal. H2CMR is a very useful reticle and one of my favorites for movers. All that said they had a few issues. Zero would drift a few 1/10th. So I dumped them.

Kahles was a sponsor of the team I was shooting for. So had them for for a while, well the glass would do some crazy things in certain light. Bullet impact would change with a magnification increase/decrease. It took a while to figure this one out. Luckily I have a good partner and we push one another. He challenged me to shoot a 500 yard target at 15X that was an impact then went to 24X miss 3 times. Adjusted parallax and tried again impact moved back to 15X and miss again. So they all came off.

Now from the best of my knowledge both companies have improved QC and these issues have been resolved.

Hensoldt that has the best glass hands down. The model was a 4X16, turrets were a little hard and hard on the fingers due to the shapes of the turrets. When the 3.5X28 was first offered, I was on the preorder list @ 4k got the call that they were in, price increased to 7.5k. I declined the order. At 4k I was in, at close to 8k I could not justify it. Maybe one day I will nut up but I have other things I would rather have.

Vortex Gen ll, It tends to be my go to. You can dead nut zero. They are built like a tank and weigh as much as one too. I usually pick them up used for 1600-1700. The glass doesn't have the resolution of the 3 above but it holds zero no questions about

Premier Heritage is another example of very good glass. Unfortunately it would drift zero took a 6 day long range course and every day I had a re zero.

TT I believe bought them out, I never bought one the few I have looked through very nice glass. I can not comment on reliability.

ZT only looked, nice glass they are supposed to be bomb proof. I can not comment. Again for the money I spend it on 2- Gen ll for the one ZT.

That's the long answer to your question, if you have the flow it's worth it. If it's a little tight Gen ll or NX8 will get you on target and keep you there for 1/2 the price.

That's kind of my thought on it. I am surprised the vortex ranks that high, however that is good considering the affordability of them. I think I will probably look into the NX8. My nightforce scopes have always done me right so far. Like you said for the difference in the money. One of these days maybe I'll get a chance to try one of the other higher end set up

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
