Richards Microfit Gunstocks

About 15 years ago I got a Richards stock for a Win M52B target model. As I recall it was 80% inletted. The rifle had a bull barrel and the only inletting that was needed was to remove for the barrel. The inletting in the action area was fine with no fitting needed.

Was is wood or laminate?

Im curious if their AAA/Exhibition is as nice as a blank in the same category. Or are they overselling it a bit

It was laminate- blue & grey- not particularly attractive but for a benchrest 22 it puts bullets in one slightly oblong hole at 25 yards.- of course part of it is due to the rifle built by Les Womack, a student of PO Ackley, but credit also the stock.

I have used Richards on 8-10 different rifles and boyds on several and had good luck with both. The Richards have taken a little more work, what I like is that they are unfinished where almost all boyds heva finish already applied. This is a Richards stock that I built a 9.3x62 on. it was a AAA rated wood

I put Richards stocks on two of my rifles: a laminated one on my Rem 700 SS .375 RUM, and a AA Fancy Claro Walnut one on my .300 Weatherby Vanguard. It took them several months to ship the Walnut one, and the one they shipped WAS NOT the grade of AA Fancy like they advertised. I called them and they agreed to send me a different stock. The second one was AA Fancy and I am very satisfied with the finished stock.

I pillar and glass bedded both of these stocks and I hand checkered both of them with my favorite multi-panel wrap around patterns.

Recently ordered a Boyd’s. We had to dance a little with shipping as I am in Alaska and prefer US Postal. In the end, they won with UPS. My way or the highway. That’s ok, I appreciated a solid policy. Anyway, I have not received it but it was shipped (ups) a couple of days ago. What impresses me is that it was less than 2 weeks order to shipment and I ordered during their Holiday shutdown. I expect barrel channel issues but if the rest fits well I’ll be a very happy customer.

It looks like the wood needs quite a bit of finishing. For those that bought the laminate, how much finishing was involved? I have a Boyd's Spike Camp that is drop-fit for my 6.5 Creedmoor but I want something heavier for a .338-06 Savage I'm building.

I just received a stock from Richards, it was ordered on December 8th and was supposed to arrive March 8, so slightly late as with everything now!!

It’s a #102 Old Classic, A Grade Claro and has a 90* Ebony tip and cap without spacer. This is inletted for a Pre-64, claimed to be 99% but have not installed an action yet. I also had them add an additional 1/2” to the comb.

Yes it helps me. I have a blank that I'm considering sending to them for precisely what you've ordered and now possess, the 102 classic. In fact, I wanted to ship that off this week but multiple interruptions have kept me from doing so.

I had two stocks done in the last few years with owner supplied blanks. One was with Richards done by CNC and one done with the old style duplicator. The one done with the duplicator was almost a ruined expensive piece of walnut. The holes weren't on center, the barrel channel wasn't on center. The inlet wasn't correct, basically a disaster. Fortunately there was a local gunstock craftsman that saved it, albeit at great expense. The Richards stock was a drop in with minor sanding and finish work. Never again will I have a stock made on a duplicator. This is how to make a gunstock in the 21st century. YMMV.

I finally got around to seeing how the inlet fit in the stock posted above. It is NOT a drop in, the inlet is .15” too narrow based on two separate actions.

Not what I was expecting out of a “99% inlet,” but I’ll win in the end!

Same here. I got a Richards for an older Savage 110 I just rebarreled. No inlet for the bolt release, and not enough clearance for the sear.

I am considering ordering one from Richard's for my 416 Taylor project, but am still unsure. I have bought several laminates from Boyd's over the years and have been happy, but I m considering going with Richard's on a walnut stock.

Mine arrived just a few days ago. The barrel is not ready so I just placed the action in and it is a touch tight and will need some minor work. Overall, I am pleased. In fact, I'm probably going to order another in laminated for another project.

I bought it locally years ago and frankly cannot remember. I then supplied it to Richard's microfit.

The only problem with Richard’s is when you order from their wood supply you’re ordering blind. No pictures of the wood are offered. That said, I’ve ordered several in AAA and exhibition grade. They were beautiful. Here’s an exhibition grade stock in English walnut I ordered from Richards.
