Rhino, Elephant, and Lion in one hunt

I remember seeing one advertised here for $20,000. It may have been 25 but not more than that. It was called a “self sustaining” whereas it killed its own game on the guys fenced in farm
Yeah, that outfitter was pretty honest. He called it "wild managed lion hunt" and was very clear that it was not a "wild" lion.

To me, if it doesn’t depend on man to survive, hunts it’s own prey, and fights other lions to breed. It’s a wild lion. I appreciate that outfitter was honest about fencing by calling it “wild managed”. That type of honesty is what I think is lacking from many and causes South Africa’s image problem.

Yes, that’s the one. I think that he was completely honest and if I was allowed to bring the lion into the USA I would have bought that hunt

Tanzania's lion hunt permit quota comes down to 1.67 lions per 1,000km sq. and there are studies calling for a quota of 0.5 lions per 1,000 km sq. going up to 1 lion per 1,000 km sq. for Selous as they feel current limits are unsustainable.

Then, you have RSA "wild lions" in 50K acres (202km sq.) being advertised for hunting on this very thread. How can that be sustainable year after year without supplementing the RSA "wild lions" with new ones that are being farm raised elsewhere?

I should add to my definition born to wild lions. You bring up a very valid point and that is the exact question I would want solid answers to before booking any hunt in South Africa for a dangerous game animal. Your same argument very much applies to other species such as buffalo and sable as well.

I have hunted the 240,000 acre property mentioned. It is Cooenrad Vermack. I hunted plains game there. No put and take. If I remember right they take 2 lions per yr. Self sustaining and no feeding of them is done. They either hunt for themselves or starve. Hunted 7 days. If I remember correctly I saw lions on 3 of the days. Elephants on 2 or 3 days. Rhinos on 5 days and buffalo on 6 of the days.
One single property with only a perimeter fence. Interior fences are torn down as they acquire more property. 375 square miles. Kalahari area so not extremely heavy bush.
When I was there they had an elephant that had killed one of the workers approx 30 days before I arrived. They were having trouble getting a permit to kill that elephant if I understood it correctly.
Lion hunting there could be significantly different from Zim, but definitely not put and take. When I was there they said the lions from there were importable to the USA. Seems like they quoted me $50K for a lion......
The above may answer a couple of questions mentioned earlier in the thread.

You keep making assumptions and accusations that you know nothing about....who said year after year you can hunt one on the area?

Looks like someone else does know something about it.

From my personal experience hunting a "wild" lion in South Africa, I call bullshit. Because you will have to believe an awful lot of that. I was stupid to buy it, from a "reputable" outfitter. Heck of a nice guy, great stories. Just a bit careless with the full truth....

And I can assure you he hunted a cbl under dubious cercumstance and you think all hunting south of the limpopo river falls in the same category so single minded you are......

Where did he hunt it? How big was the property? You dont know and you dont care because you look down on anybody who hunts or offers DG hunts south of the limpopo....I can 100% guarantee he did not hunt this lion on 50 000 acres in Northern KZN.....but what do I know.....

For what it’s worth: You might want to think about the way you word your replies since you come across as being very combative and a bit nasty as well.

You obviously know what you are talking about, and I agree with you in spirit, but the way you say it is off-putting.

You are a PH and you live there as well, so it’s pretty obvious that you know what you are talking about, so I’m sure that you can find a way to articulate what you want to say without coming across like you do

So enlighten us. What defines a properly managed big 5 reserve to you? The yes, no, I know more than everyone else answers don’t change anyone’s perception of things.

I have always been straight forward rather than beating about the bush. I am passionate about my country, hunting, conservation and guiding people on foot safaris. I get upset when people make statements that are incorrect and not applicable to what is being stated. Some people generalize about some things yet they are ignorent and persist with generalizing and imply that because of all are. For example, yes you can hunt a cbl lion on a much smaller property but then they generalize and make unsubstantiated posts implying that all lion hunting is put and take or CBL that is far from the truth. Same with buffalo hunting...posting pictures of a buffalo cow with a tag and then making stupid comments...implying that all buffalo hunting here is captive bred and you can basically pre book one and get a progress report on its growth....well..... Now if that upsets somebody it was not directed at I apologise to them, but at least some people should do there homework and not generalize if they do not know what they are talking about.

By all means, if anybody is apposed to DG hunting in SA by all means hunt where you prefer but do not make unsubstantiated belittling statements about DG hunting in SA.....

If my comments offended you I apologise to you, if anybody prefer they can report them to admin for removal and they can repremand me or even remove me.

To me it simply means an area large enough to ensure the species are self sustainable and there are then over time a certain number of animals that can be hunted. For an area to be able to handle all of the Big 5 it needs to be in the right geographical area and obviously of big enough size.

The origanal post was is there a place where you can hunt elephant, rhino and lion on the same property, the simple answer is yes.

That’s better! Educate us as to what the reality is instead of making off-handed comments;)

What does the average guy here know about DG hunting other than what he read or from the few? dg hunts he’s gone on as a client

Though I am sure, if one wishes, prior to arrival they could all be placed in the same farm in RSA.
Can you please provide more details of where this is possible to order a lion, elephant and rhino to be placed on the same farm in RSA prior to a client arriving?

The thread has , expectedly , turned into a canned hunting thread with people pointing fingers out of high moral positions. The question is simply ... Do you think this only happens in South Africa ? If you do , then you are very very uninformed and /or naïve.

The OP has posted very simple, honest and straitforward question!
The most simple thing to do, would be, for the people with local knowledge to point to the direction of where exactly such hunt is possible. Very simple. Who are the outifitters offering hunts for this three trophies?

Later edit:
If such answer is not possible, my advice to op would be:
Hardest thing to find would be available rhino.
So, to look for oufitter offering rhino, and check with him for other two.
Of course, homework must be done, refenrences for the outfitter, etc

I hunted buffalo in Mkuze Falls PGR, which is in KZN in 2010, a very large property where I saw personally the seven dangerous animals, totally self sustainable.
I´m sure @IvW knows it and remembers the size of it.

I hunted Pongola Game Reserve, also in KZN, in 2017, 31.000 ha or 76.600 acres, the 7 dangerous, except lion are there.

And there are many other very large properties in RSA that offer "real" hunts, you just have to do your homework and stop believing that all hunting there is canned and in small properties.

Fenced, yes, they have to protect the animals from poachers, and the properties from settlers, but do keep in mind that over half of the animals in SA can go over, under, or through any fence.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
