Real world opinions on 454 Ruger SRH?

Its one of my favorite hunting revolvers. Ive killed many animals in africa with it. I had the trigger tuned by jrh gunsmithing. Incredible gun. I have several. 454’s 480’s and 44’s. The 454 is the best

I had the SRH model you mentioned. Nothing wrong with it. Reasonable accuracy. No mechanical issues.
I decided after hunting with it a few times that handgun hunting was not my game.
I sold it and bought the Alaskan.

I too have looked at the .480 Ruger. You can almost reload it to .475 Linebaugh ballistics but finding reasonably priced factory ammo/reloading brass is a problem. IMO, Ruger should've chambered their SRH in the Linebaugh which would have revitalized that cartridge similar to the Casull in a 6 shot DA revolver.
Starline made a run of 480 Ruger brass not too long ago.
Apparently they just released another run. Starline, Graf & Sons, and Midway show it in stock, if anyone is looking for it.

I used to be an avid handgun hunter. I had a 7.5” SRH stainless in .454. It was a little rough. Later purchased a 6” Taurus Raging Bull. It was smoother and more accurate. Recoil was more manageable as well. Sold the SRH.
Hope this helps.

The bfr and freedom arms get extra velocity because of a tighter cylinder gap. This also goes for smith and wessons vs bfr’s. My 4” 500jrh gets higher veloities with the same bullet than my 6.5” sw 500. My 7.5” bfr 460 gets nearly 250fps more than my sw 8 3/8” 460. Sw are top shelf and comparing double action cylinder gaps and thus velocity bw single action and double action revolvers is a poor way to determine “better”.

Booked with Harold Grinde - Gana River - they sure kill some good ones - who'd you get set up with?

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
