I know the subject of Spencer's double rifle came up before, but I can't seem to find the thread.

What was the consensus on what his double rifle is? On the episode I am watching he says it's in .416 Rigby.

The rigby cartridge was developed in nineteen eleven, and the company built the first double in that chambering in nineteen twelve… so historically it’s entirely possible a guy that was hunting in Africa in nineteen twenty three could be using one..

Good question! In the previous episode on the train when be checked that it was loaded it looked to me like it was perhaps a 9.3x74r. Not sure.

Rock Islands take on Spencer Duttons rifles

In one still, it looks like it has a regulation screw, which I don’t think Sabatti’s have. I’m thinking it’s a Rizzini Rhino

I was going to post the RIA link but ya beat me to it! It's not English for sure...looks Sabbati. I haven't watched this weekend's episode yet. A double in 416 Rigby doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The rimmed 500/416 of more recent manufacture is the double version of a 416 Rigby...400s at about 2400fps. However, since when has Hollywood been concerned with getting firearms correct? We are the only ones that care about that and they don't make shows for us.

He got it off a German officer taken prisoner....;)
Is that the actual explanation in the show? I haven't been watching. I'd think a German officer would have had something like one of Schuler's masterpieces...

I’ve been told what brand of double is in 1923 before, but I cannot remember it now. I believe it was a British maker recently on the scene. Nothing the average fanatic has ever heard of. It may have been the same guy that made the rifle for the Bond film Skyfall.

The props department certainly got it wrong though, from the caliber to the coin finish, nothing is correct to the era. A 470, 500, 450/400, 465, 475, those would have been correct rimmed cartridges from the era. Nearly 100% of the guns would have been color case hardened, almost all of them worn to gray patina in just a couple years of use. A small handful would have been pewter color, having had their color case removed at the factory. None would have been coin finished.

The maker I was thinking of is Anderson Wheeler. That’s what I was told anyway. The work looks similar with a straight-back boxlock.

Postscript: I do think the photo above of the Rizzini Rhino’s regulating wedge torx bolt is compelling. I didn’t see any scallop the boxlock on the series, however.

I appreciate the details provided regarding his Double Rifle (by knowledgeable AH Members) is much more interesting then the entire show — except for some of the Nude scenes. I still watched every episode but the excessive violence, cruelty, sexual assaults, and general “bad luck” that guy & his Wife have getting from Africa to Montana has gotten RIDICULOUS (his ship sunk; he killed a rich guy on an Ocean liner; ran into the Mafia & corrupt sheriff, killed 2 bums on a train,,,,and he STILL HASN’t REACHED MONTANA after 3 seasons !! And his Wife is even LESS Lucky..
I thought 1883 was better, thought Yellowstone was better…..disappointed in 1923. But can’t take my eyes off the train wreck

Totally agree. Season 1 of 1923 was very good, season 2 has been utter pain at every turn. The villain is not compelling, he cannot decide what he should be: murderer, hospitality expert, sadist, philosopher, etc.

Meanwhile the Dutton's prove to deserving of death. They know their enemy, yet they all decide to bunker down or go out alone and get themselves murdered rather than just take out the villain. Illogical.

And if Spencer is this great war hero, why is he so incompetent regarding logistics? The guy can't seem to catch the right train, get anywhere on time, avoid trouble?

Lets all be honest, we wanted to watch Spencer struggle for a whole season to get home, then we wanted to watch him destroy all enemies foreign and domestic for a full season in a way that would make Rambo blush. We have two episodes left and it this point I think we're ambivalent whether he lives or dies, whether his wife finds him, whether he gets ambushed on the way home or dies in a blaze of glory.

Taylor Sheridan has deluded himself into thinking he's an excellent writer, but every time he fires all his writers and takes the helm, he makes garbage.

@rookhawk - you are right on target here. I’m so “starved” to see a good hollywood movie (last good one was Top Gun Mavrick) that my Wife and I now watch Netflix at Home - with popcorn and a stiff drink ! 1883 was good - Not great - the Daughter turned from Virgin to banging everything on the prairie except the Bison ! But 1923 somehow found Montana was not only loaded with cattle but even more Lesbian prostitutes and Nun killing Indians then possible - like an episode of Sex in the City from 100 years ago. The only good & believable actress is Harrison Ford’s Wife.
Where is John Wayne, Gary Cooper, & Barbara Stanwyck ?
Note: I watched “Black Bag” in movie theater yesterday - Good movie, better then average
