QD Rings, Base for Model 70 Safari Express

Ive used them all and they all work but, you can't beat Leupold for the easiest to install and how easy they are to remove and reinstall in the field

...Ditto what shootist43 and what Rob404 said.

As soon as Leupold made the QD's available (Early 90's)I installed a Leupold VariX lll 1.5x5 in QD mounts on my .416 Taylor The scope and mounts have stood the test of time. Counting range time, and African hunting with my Taylor, I figure there have been upwards 300 rounds shot from my rifle. NO issues with the mounts or the scope.

Works for me...

I put Talley bases and QD rings (low) on my Model 70 Classic Safari Express. I use them for most of my rifles and have no complaints, plus their service is excellent!

Good Evening! Just picked up a Winchester Model 70 Alaskan in 375H&H. According to Winchester, the 375 "Alaskan" takes bases for the 375 "Safari Express" due to the screw hole pattern on the rear base being closer than the screw holes on the front base. My question is this... can anyone provide the Product Number for Talley Bases for the 375 Safari Express? I have gotten myself very confused.

Make sure you can see your iron sights over the base if having that option is the reason for choosing QD rings. Given the caliber choice, I presume hunting dangerous game with iron sights is on the table. It is really amazing the different ways manufacturers determine what's a "low" height scope ring. No two makes are the same.

I chose a rail exactly the same height as standard two-piece Weaver bases. Warne QD "low" rings were almost not low enough. I'm only lightly on my stock's Monte Carlo cheekpiece when the crosshairs come in view. It's not necessary to hunt for them but view is not instantaneous either. I can see the iron sights over the rail but it requires being tighter to the stock.

On my Safari Express I used the .330 hole spacing I believe. I just called Warne and they told me what to buy. For the rings, I took my scope to the Sportsman's Warehouse and shopped the ring heights for all my scopes. I have two scopes for the rifle. It was very helpful to allow me to get the lowest mounts for everything as my choice was below what the ring manufacturer recommended. My VX-3i 4.5-14 x 40 was super low with just the bare minimum clearance on the rear sight. I see the front sight at some powers but it doesn't bother me.

Doesn't matter anymore as it's off for repairs due to shifting zero during power change and discontinued. Bummer to happen so close to the season. Maybe it gets replaced and I can upgrade...

Give Mark at R&M firearms(sponsor here) He suggested Talley QD’s for mine and worked like a champ with Swarovski 1.6 10x42 z6i

Great price and service beat everyone else by a mile

If it's possible, taking the gun to a large box store and "trying on" rings would be best. Not an option for me up here in the sticks. I had to order online. Fortunately, my Springfield set up with Weaver standard bases and medium rings was already the perfect height. Then I added iron sights and went looking for quick detachable rings. Checking the big name manufacturers' websites I discovered how much variability exists in sizing. I finally had to settle for low Warne rings that are just slightly lower than standard Weaver medium rings (Weaver does make QD rings of same height as their standard rings but they are by all accounts junk). The low Warne rings worked. Then when I built my 404 Mauser 98, I picked up a rail the same height as the one on my Springfield (which was exactly the same height as the old Weaver bases it replaced) and checked the ring height using the scope and rings from the 30-06. Something a bit lower might be better but no one makes QD rings lower than Warne so I ordered a duplicate set. The old reliable 3x Weaver (formerly forty years hunting on my Springfield) does ghost the 404's front sight and hood (24" barrel) but I don't let it bother me. Bumping up to 4x would probably make it disappear but I prefer 3x or less for quick acquisition.

Ohh one last thing:
Talley or Leupold(maybe fits the safari express?)bases and rings may have an advantage over the Warne in that they don't cover the ejection port on the forward end. Look closely at the post below. Mine is the same way. It is the only complaint I have with them. If I were a serious DG hunter I would likely have the base milled back to clear for loading or switch to something that didn't cover it.
I went with Warne base and low QD rings. The scope is perfect height for me.

And yes this rifle is over scoped, it may not stay on here for long.

Or you can flip it around if your scope doesn’t conflict:

The issue with the rifle in that image is the same problem I first faced mounting a 3x9 scope on my WWII Springfield: getting proper eye relief with a scope that has a short tube. At first I went with an extended ring ahead of the ejection port. That worked but when I added iron sights I wanted QD rings and no one makes those extended. So I found a CCOP USA rail with cutout for loading that would let me move the scope back just enough. It works fine and doesn't interfere with loading or ejection.

When I built my 404 on a Mauser 98, I added the same iron sights and same rail and Warne QD rings. The receiver had already been tapped for three hole rail so I was kinda stuck going that route rather than two piece bases. Because the matte finish isn't great on these aftermarket steel rails, I planned to send them off with the rifles for bluing. So I went ahead and trimmed the rail for the Mauser to remove unsightly overhang ahead of the ring and to contour the edges of the rail over the loading port.

I can load the DG Mauser's magazine very quickly. With some difficulty I did finally managed to redesign the extractor claw so it snaps over on cartridges dropped in the chamber if speed-of-light loading is required. Not the most asthetic setup but not as ugly as a full bodied pic rail with slots end to end. It keeps zero and doesn't impede loading. That's the most important thing.

First I'm going to thank you sir and then I'm going to laugh at myself for a moment for why I didn't do this before. Might have been because of the little scope. As the big scope is off to repair I can either redo the forward base and the little scope or...hunt open sights! I have little to lose at this point being down to the 2.5x.

You may not be able to move the 2x scope back far enough if the front base is flipped around. For a DG rifle you want the crosshairs to instantly come into full view when the rifle is mounted. Don't want to be hunting for them when a buffalo is barreling down on you. Mount the scope loosely in the rings, just enough so that it can be moved with some effort. Then close your eyes and mount the rifle. Readjust scope eye relief and repeat until crosshairs come up instantly. Then mark the scope depth with a colored pencil against one ring. That way you can start leveling the scope without losing the eye relief.

I started this thread as a neophyte with big dreams. Not much has changed I suppose. To update, I ultimately went with Talley - namely their .330 signature steel base and low, two-screw quick detachable rings with levers. I also chose not to drill and tap to #8 and am glad I did not.
