As I’m reading and doing more research on Africa, there’s one thing I don’t think that’s been brought up. Is their public land to hunt on? Does it work differently over there? I’m asking about Namibia specifically, and also all of Africa in General.

Answers above cover most former British clonies or protectorates.

In former French colonies, there is a different tradition and legal hunting system, you still have option for chasse libre, free hunt.
But, try to organize it, if you are not a local resident!

I am resident both in Panama and the Congo [emoji1077] where I grew up. My mom is still living in Pointe-Noire so I visit her every year, and go hunting, car and rifles are here, and she and some friends take care of the license renewal in due time..
I know the hunting territory, the people, the roads… that’s how it is possible to do it by myself.
We found a herd of 4 early morning last week in the plains, near a lake.

I always try and take pictures before shooting.. I found it helps me be much more calm and “clinical” in my shot decision thereafter..
Long story short, I confirm...

That’s interesting. So it sounds like Africa has a lot of different hunting traditions based on which country took over each part of Africa, back when the scramble for Africa was a thing. I read it and saw that he got a nice buffalo.

Some years ago, there was a guy organizing self guided hunts for tourists in Cameroun.
But he passed away. He had a web page.
Basically, he would help hunter to get to hunting with pigmies in rain forest, helped with permits, hotel, etc.
The hunt was not cheap, but was considerably cheaper then with local outfitters.

However as this forum is sponsored by outfitters, there is not much info on selfguided hunts in Africa here. It is there, present in some countries, but not too much advertised here.
And local hunters in Africa who practice self guided hunts, do not need online friends from western world - like us - to take them hunting (they can manage without them), so neither locals are active here to provide some more insights.

Makes sense why the local hunters wouldn’t say much, that sounds like an awesome adventure though.

There are very few local residents in those countries that have a sport hunting culture. Many rural Africans have a subsistence hunting culture and they don’t buy licenses. Places like Cameroon jungle the trackers are all poachers/hunters in the off season. I hunted 3 concessions in Cameroon savanna two years ago and it was the worst poaching I ever hope to see. As bad as I thought that was I was still mostly successful. It was a bit of a joke in camp. One of their PHs decided to help a European hunter as a friend on a locally owned hunting block. The block would have been owned by an outfitter just a few years before. They managed to get 1 hartebeest in two weeks. No eland, no buffalo. I don’t doubt there are a few well protected areas far from town where someone could hunt, but sport hunting is not widespread in those countries.
