Probably another foolhardy idea…

I think this is a great plan. I like to manage deer and a 150”-170” whitetail is not uncommon here, though between food, stands, minerals, habitat improvements it gets pretty costly. I was thinking of selling a hunt or putting a spot out for lease to subsidize this but I’d certainly be open to a trade.
that’s exactly the response I was hoping for with the original post. Im willing to bet that most of us own hunting property and actively manage it why not host each other.

Now this is not advice, it’s not even a suggestion it’s just something to reflect on while your minds still clear… Dr. E.W.Hostetler played by Jimmy Stewart in the shootest.

I’ve been kicking an idea around for awhile now and have been unsure how to broach the subject but it seems like as good a time as any with the ever increasing costs associated with hunting and degrading dollar value.

I propose the idea for discussion among our forum members that we work towards some sort of a reciprocal host/hunting system. Where one member host another and guides them on a hunt and in return the recipient does the same at a later time.

Possible benefits I see for the community include more in person interaction between members. Members from lower economic situations being able to experience the joys of travel hunting. A chance to hunt regional game animals ex. East coast hunters being hosted to hunt western game and vise versa.

Well there it is an idea born from too many hours on wheel watch with nothing to do but think. But now that the idea is out there perhaps it’s atleast worth hashing over.
There is already a website that does that but do not know if I can mention them. They are called hunter meets hunter.

I was under the impression that Alberta had a hunter-host program similar to Nova Scotia’s special guide licence program.View attachment 665020
They do, but the qualification has some restrictions. Limits on # guests and what relationship, species, remuneration of any kind. They protect the Outfitters very well.
Great if you want to take your brother every couple years for a Whitetail, but otherwise.....

This is from my RECONX trail camera on my property in Florida. Trapped 3 large hogs last week, 2 more big boars showed up. Once I move there in a few years, I might host a few of you overpaid hillbillies to come haul these stinky things away. ;)

I think in the future, if you don't own land, you'll have to barter, lease or pay big money to hunt.

Future generations will have to plan from an early age how to manage a mortgage, car payments, education for their children and retirement, PLUS land to hunt. Most people around the World only have one hobby, while Americans born after WWll enjoy doing a huge variety of things in a frivolous manner. Cheap disposable WalMart equipment, used once a year, then the next weekend something completely different.

The post War collection of hobbies like bass boats, Harley bikes, Golf Club Membership, vacation cruises, etc. will not be possible all at the same time. The amount of disposable income for these toys vs a mortgage is undergoing a huge change, and our hunting habits will have to change along with it.

I dont have much to offer, but my little 135 acre property on the TX/LA border is covered up with hogs.. we've just got a few shacks/blinds set up and a handful of feeders on the property.. but its a place to bust bacon if anyone is ever interested..

Im actually headed there this weekend to do some maintenance and hog hunting (gotta love it when you offer to take the wife to a fancy restaurant in Dallas for Valentines Day, and she says "wouldn't you rather head to Cass County and take care of that hog problem that weekend?"...

You don't have to ask me twice! lol..

That is the situation over here in Europe. You guys are lucky to have public land hunting. Enjoy as long as you can, I sincerely hopes it stays that way for all of you.

@DieJager
A bit like tinder dating for hunters.
If'n y'all don't like the hunt swipe left
Do you need a photo of the host to see if'n they meet your looks criteria. If you did mine would be taken down on the fact it scares the kids and most adults.
Id definitely not get a swap with my looks.

Dang, I'll almost be driving pats Cass county when I'm over there with my wife in October this year.
We will be in El Campo for a few days then heading over to baton rouge.
We will be catching up with a few AHers for a meal while we are down that way. @ Mark Biggerstaff has recommended a nice Mexican meal.
Now I'm retired and don't have to work as hard if'n someone asks me what Manual Labor is my answer is ain't he some sort of Mexican peasant.

My middle daughter is a senior at LSU in Baton Rouge. We go there a few times a year to visit.

From our hunting property to Baton Rouge is about a .[emoji6] hour drive… but if you’re up for a hog hunt, I’d be glad to host you :)

We will be driving thru Shreveport it think from Dallas to baton rouge unless the wife changes her mind.
Bob

Shreveport is only an hours drive from our hunting property.. and to get to Shreveport from Dallas you pass within about a thirty minute drive…

Sounds like we need to plan a hog hunt …

I’ll loan you a .!

@Tubby’s Canteen - I like your idea —— where are YOU taking ME? I’m easy to please and like hunting/calling coyote, bobcat or fox as much as any Big game hunting….Night hunting varmints is also a treat for me. At my disposal is only some average deer hunting and sporadic Spring turkey on my small property….not worth a long trip unless someone has No property and only gets to go on occasional Paid-Guided-Hunts. I like DIY hunts even though the game is often more modest in quality & success rates. Still, some members might be apprehensive of hosting someone they Never met before and could be faced with spending days or a week with. I went away on a 3 day snowshoe rabbit hunt with a Beagler I only met once - he turned out to be a weirdo and never hunted with him again.

There's still plenty of public land in the north of Sweden where I live. Just the city where I live has 49000 hectares of land that you can get access to for something like 150 euros per year iirc. Unfortunately stuff like that seems to be very rare on the continent.

@HankBuck depending on how the spring goes I could potentially offer you a whitetail/bear hunt in a luxury hunting camp it’s one room approximately 16x20 partially insulated and generally gets trashed by a bear every spring. As an added bonus we even have a partially finished outhouse we’re hoping to get done this fall.
I say potentially because I’m unsure at this point if we’ll be able to keep our camp lease. There is an Australian mining company prospecting for lithium at present and we’re not allowed into the camp if they file a claim well loose it all together.

I plan to build another camp this spring regardless of that outcome of the mine on a property I bought but that would be a year or so away from being completed and ready to host

That’s a picture of my current camp.

I have whitetail, turkey, and exotics to trade and a nice lodge. I don't know how our rules here on AH would apply to this situation. I would not want to run afoul of AH rules in pursuing this idea.

I assume with brickburn commenting on the thread that AH is aware of its content

I would also assume that part of the reason for creating a community such as AH is not simply sharing knowledge, or trading material goods, but relationships as well. The group hunt being assembled by member @Green Chile is a perfect example of this.
