Privi 300 grain FMJS for buffalo in 375 H&H?

1) Federal Trophy Bonded Bear Claw
2) Rhino Solid Shank
3) Swift A Frame
4) Barnes TSX
5) Northfork Cup Point Solid
6) Labor Fur Ballistik TMR
7) RWS TUG
8) Hornady DGS Bonded
Thanks for the list. I will see which ones are currently available online

Why would you want solids for buffalo? Get some TSX or Swift AF
Because they work.
For many years before the plethora of premium bullets became available, that was standard practice.
My avatar bull was taken with one Hornady solid.
It later became a more normal practice to start with a premium soft with a mag full of solids below which I still think is good practice.

A chap from another forum said he used PPU .375 h and h solid on Hippo, said it went clean through the skull and it dropped where it stood. Don’t think he mentioned the distance.

John, was it their monolithic solid or their FMJ?

Yeah, I recall those days. When I shot my first Cape buffalo in Keyna, it was one RWS 300Gr TUG followed by six Remington 300Gr round nosed steel jacketed FMJ solids in the magazine of a BRNO ZKK602.

From my understanding it was a PPU cup and core solid. He said they worked like they are supposed to. Punched its way clean through.
He must have gotten very lucky. Look at all of these reviews. I just did an internet search and came across this, a few minutes back.
All of them faced the same problem I did. But I was the only one stupid enough to try and use this load against elephant (although to be fair, I wasn’t in the habit of reading these things online during the time of that hunt).

The point between to hit brain or cervical vertebrae which will be protected by heavy bone and horn in a charge.
I would not bring solids for buff with todays other bullets. I used Hornady Bonded DGX and put my 1,700 pound buff down fast no problem

So it appears to be a brass problem rather than a bullet problem. But if they won’t chamber and the bolt won’t close it’s a moot point and totally useless especially in the field. I’ve always had good fortune with PPU 9.3x62 brass and 8mm Mauser brass but have never used their belted magnum brass for anything. After hearing about this I never will.

I shot a few of these into a block of firewood about 10-12 inches thick and they stayed inside. A 7.62x39 went right through. They would not be very high on my list.

I use PPU brass for most of my 375 H&H loads. I've never had a problem with their brass. I handload and haven't tried their factory ammo. Irrespective, I wouldn't be using a simple guilding metal FMJ (of any manufacturer) for anything but target practice, they're just not designed for the task.

I had no idea they were just gilding metal until it was pointed out in this thread. That’s why I came here to ask the question. There is nothing on their website to indicate that the bullet is only gilding metal or is unsuitable for dangerous game.

On the left is a PPU 300 gr .375 soft point.
Right is a PPU 300 gr Solid. No bonding and no apparent steel under copper.

Both appear to be gilding metal over lead core. Is that correct?

Yes correct. As far as I can tell. Although in the solid the core is holding onto the jacket, on the soft point the core came right apart.

He made it sound like that's all he's going to use on Buff. No mention of softs. I'd way rather use a good premium soft than a cheap, POS solid like the PPU, even on leaving shots. A flat nosed monolithic solid would be my preference if using solids for leaving shots. But I doubt he'll find any factory ammo so loaded.

Norma makes an excellent factory loaded 300Gr monolithic solid (with a flat meplat).
I’ve got one bull elephant with this load. Side brain shot. Bullet was never recovered. Complete pass through (as can be expected on a side brain shot with a properly loaded high quality monolithic solid).

Just to clarify for all the people kind enough to respond. I will be taking softs and solids.

I have Hornady DGX Bonded Soft points as well as Hornady DGS Solids being shipped to me now. I also have Barnes TSXs as well as Banded Solids being shipped as well.

All of these bullets are 300 grains. Anxious to see how they shoot as far as point of impact and accuracy.

Thanks for all the information here.

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
