Pricing question for custom 500 Jeffery

For sure. Though on a .500 it might be an encumbrance unless you need it for vision reasons. Assuming the peep is hand detachable, keep it and use a detachable scope (easy to do on a Ruger action. I have a friend whose custom Lott has a place to keep his detachable NECGS sight beneath the pistol grip cap. Scope comes off and the sight goes on should a follow-up be required.

That or the barrel mounted rear sight was my thoughts. Still not positive I'm going to keep it. Picked it up to flip it, but now that i have it..... about to go pop off a round or two

Ruger has that angled screw pulling the action tightly into the stock. They are too often loose. Then to make matters worse, people think they are like a Winchester or other Mauser style bolt gun and they over tighten the other action screws. Thus "screwing up" the wood and then the floor plate doesn't fit right.

If only people would read the owners manual

Tighten the angled screw to 95 inch pounds first. Then just snug up the other screws.

When the angle screw is loose, that metal tang on top of wrist cuts into the wood and starts cracking it with every shot (recoil).

The other stupid thing that happens is to lock such a gun down on a lead sled type device. With no give (such as even the stoutest of shoulders), the stock can crack or split.

Otherwise there is no good explanation I can think of for such a stout stock to crack. A Ruger RSM has a very thick wrist.

BTW, I have one in 505 Gibbs but mine was re-bored and thus still has the integral quarter rib;)

The reason I've heard to rebarrel is that these barrels are especially hard and difficult to re-bore. I bought mine allready done as a "505 Gibbs For Big Game". One of what I'm told was 5 done at the same time.

Love the idea of even larger calibers in the RSM; my thought at one stage was to step up just a little to 450Rigby. For a "factory" D/G rifle, they were well engineered; not surprising when we understand that Bill himself was involved in the whole process.

Was actually considering tapping the barrel for a barrel mounted rear sight and tossing the peep
Couple things here, First, I would simply soft solder a rear sight base on there from someone like NECG. They may a really nice rear sight. I don't know how handy you are, but this is something you can easily do yourself with non-lead plumbing solder. It is more than strong enough for even the biggest calibers with a big surface area like a those sight bases have.
Not sure why he ditched the quarter rib, he threw on the necg peep and called it good i guess
Likely because a RSM had the quarter rib milled with the barrel. All one piece. I am actually surprised they didn't just rebore it.

As to the stock. Again, it will depend on how handy and what kind of tools you have, but a set of scrapers, gouges, basic chisels and some sand paper... and a Richard's Microfit stock could be had in a nice piece of wood for a decent price, but will require some inletting and serious finishing.
