If we're talking Africa specifically.. .375 HH for me.. the others arent even close..

If we're talking preferred overall... .358 wins in the mdwest house... the 35 Whelen and now the 358 Winchester (added earlier this year) sees a lot more overall use than the other options..

.375 Holland & Holland Magnum.

This is why.

35 Whelen without a question, if I'm hunting DG ill use my 416 Rigby

When it comes to the medium bores, which do you prefer or get the most use out of?
Mine is the .350 Remington Magnum, the world’s first short magnum. It can be loaded up or down and thereby cover the full ballistic range of .35-cal/.358 cartridges - from the .35 Remington to the .35 Whelen.

The main advantage and difference with the .350RM is that it fits a .308/2.800 length short-action, and consequently results in a lighter and more compact carbine-length weapon. Typically with 18.5” to 20” barrels, or at most 22” but then we are no longer at carbine length.

In the old days, distinctions in barrel-length mattered for sound reasons of terminology. 16.1” to 18” barrels indicated “carbines”; 19”-20” = “short rifles”; 21”-23” = non-magnum “rifles”; and 24”-26” barrels = rifles chambered for magnum cartridges.

My .350RM pair are the original Remington M600 (18.5”) and its successor, the M660 (20”). The M600, run irons only, weighs 6.4lbs. The M660, mounted with a compact fixed 2.5x Leupy optic, weighs all of 7.3lbs. Both are extremely accurate.

I like my 340 wby and 375 wby.
They will do everything on both side of the pond. Not that I dont have other calibers. Probably have all the calibers up to 550 magnum. Have shot every one of them. Some are heavy in recoil. As long as you dont put your self in harms way 338 and 375 will do sll you want on any game. May be you should not take a shot when things are not conducive. Problem may be with time constraint than actual hunting. When you go with the attitude that you are coming home with the game you are after every time, you may ask for trouble some times. It is not the caliber 338 or 500. But Conditions are not right. That is the way it is.

I have shot quite a bit of game with medium bores, but only in two calibers, 9.3x62 and .375 H&H (I don’t think my .325 WSM qualifies as a medium bore, but then I do see .338’s listed…).

Between the two I have, both are extremely accurate and seem equally effective on game. If you told me I could only keep one, it would be the 9.3x62 as the rifle is handier. This seems typical of rifles of these respective calibers.

I vote for the .35s purely for the versatility. Pretty simple to turn a Whelen into a .357 magnum rifle, a .35 Rem or load it stout for just about anything you want to point it at.

I love my .358 Norma but would sell it in a heartbeat if I had to choose between the Norma and the Whelen. Why???…I can run full power loads in a lightweight Whelen and feel less abused than with a 9+ pound Norma.

@Northern Shooter
There's only one to consider and that's the MIGHTY 35 WHELEN.
It will do everything the338s will out to 400yds, equals the 9.3x62 and loaded with 310gn Woodleighs at 2,455fps isn't to shabby either. Those 310s should penetrate the same as a 350gn 375 but without the same punch as the 375.
There's no files on a big 35 cal 310gn developing 4,000fpe.
Before anyone says anything I am in NO WAY BIASED towards the Whelen. HA HA HA HA

Tough question, l guess the 338s.
@Flewis
What have you abandoned the 35s.
That's just not cricket my old son. We all know the Whelen is better than the little 338s
HA HA HA HA HA
