Poor eyesight (well, heading that way) and open sights

Ghost ring rear sight and a proper front sight fastest and most accurate for a a DG caliber rifle

After some help please.

As age progresses, my eyes can't accommodate as well as they used to and, as such, I'm finding the contrast levels between the fore and rear sight on my double an increasing problem. I'm not keen on either a scope or a reflex but was wondering what the older gents (of which I'm sure there are possibly a couple) might do to get around this.

My Fabarm double has fantastic open sights that use a clever fibre optic trick to enhance the the sight beads to make them almost glow. The foresight is yellow and the rear sight red and this makes alignment and targeting really easy. My Chapuis on the other hand - and this is the one causing the problem - has proper old school sights with a shallow V blued rear leaf and a tiny white dot foresight. I won't deny, I'm struggling with this. I wear glasses to read and my distance vision is fine but its the distance between the sight points that causing an issue. If it were an option, I'd probably fit the Fabarm sights, but, as you can imagine, Chapuis weren't wonderfully helpful with that suggestion and surprisingly short on alternatives.

Before I get out my paintbrush and slap on some luminous paint, I was wondering whether there were any wonderfully innovative suggestions as I really don't want to walk the scope path.

Thanks in advance

I too have a Chapuis DR in 450-400. I got JJ to build me a Red Dot ramp and installed a very low profile Trijicon scope. Fabulous no more eye problems

Plaese post a photo RB, I am sure you did already but I can't find it.

Micro red dot 1MOA or 2MOA. You will never regret. I have experimented with most of the popular brands. I like the Kahles best.

Hi guys

Thanks for the renewed interest in this thread - there have been some great additions. I closed off this thread (link above) with the solution I finally went for.

There has been some fantastic input which definitely informed my final solution.

I was complaining about my 75 year old eyes when using open sights. The gun shop owner suggested lazer surgery. Says it fixed his. This is a bit tongue-in-cheek but you only live once.

I had cataract surgery in may. The best money i have ever spent with a Dr.

I now have a Trijicon RMR on the Verney as I posted elsewhere, and opted to use a Henneberger HMS mount. I experimented with a QD type mount bet it was way too high and with a reasonable cheek weld it put the dot right down in the bottom of the glass, most unsatisfactory. The Henneberger mount only raises the RMR about a millimeter above the rail, perfect. Yes it involves drilling and tapping twe small holes, but you can't have your cake and eat it. So now I have ordered a similar one to mount the Kahles on my Heym.

Hi Kevin, I know you were having problems getting the mount from Heym. Do you think it would have been better? Did you have much of a problem getting this mount and was your Heym drilled locally?
Last question I believe there is supposed to be a very good stock maker in Harare do you know who it is? I believe you know the work that Liesl needs.

Hello again, I looked on Heyms web site and saw the picture of their mount I see what you mean about the height. The Henneberger does set much lower. Did you have much of a problem getting it?

Lon

Hi Lon, I am still waiting for the Docter base from Heym USA, three months and counting. I won't cancel that order, but I will fit the Henneberger in preference and hold onto the Heym one if it ever arrives. If you want a Trijicon one they have it in stock. It is hell to find this Henneberger item on line, and then they will only ship within Germany. I sorted it out through Aramex and it is now on the way. When it arrives Roscoe will mill it out to 12mm and drill the rib as he did the Verney.
I have heard there is such a person in Harare, I will find out for you.

Hi Kevin,

Anything that you can do to help me obtain one will be appreciated.

Lon

Lon, the Henneberger base is available with either Docter or Trijicon footing. You can fit a Kahles too, it comes with an adapter plate to the Docter footing but adds about 1.5mm. That is what I am doing.

I'll order you one Lon, just let me know Trijicon or Docter.

Hi Kevin, Thank you so much I believe I would like the one with Trijicon base with as many adapter plates as possible or for Kahles and Docter. I can send you money if you like? I know I would never be able to get it from whom I am dealing with South of here.

Henneberger doesn't do the adapter plates Lon, just the base. If you buy a Kahles sight then it comes with the adapter plate to fit it to Henneberger Docter base. If you buy the Trijicon base you fit the Trijicon sight straight on.

Hi Kevin,

I just went out to my shop to see what I had on hand. I have on hand Trijicon, Kahles and Leupold.
I like the Kahles the best, but it does not have an adapter plate. I have never used the Leupold. The Trijicon is the ambient light only, which I also do not like.

If we can please get me two, both the Docter & the Trijicon. I have never used one of the Docter's.

Ok Lon, will do.
I agree the the Kahles is the best, you can't put less than that on the Heym.

Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
To much to political shit, to little Africa :-)

I doubt you are interested in any trades but I was getting ready to list a Sauer 404 3 barrel set in the 10-12 price range if your interested. It has the 404J, 30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Only the 30-06 had been shot and it has 7 rounds through it as I was working on breaking the barrel in. It also has both the synthetic thumbhole stock and somewhere between grade 3-5 non thumbhole stock
