“Gay” didn’t become common vernacular for “homosexual” until the 1950’s in the US… there’s historical reference of its use prior to that (Cary Grant for example used gay to describe “homosexual” in one of his films in 1938), but it was not common or even remotely typical vocabulary for most Americans until the 50’s… prior to that “Gay” was understood by most people to either be a name, or a descriptor for happiness…
Eliminating Enola Gay is what happens when stupid humans that don’t bother to understand the past, combined with AI that’s solely focused on the spelling of a word and not its use make decisions…
Really no different than Stanford renaming halls and streets that were once dedicated to Junipero Serra, an 18th century priest.. because students in the 21st century found reference to Serra stating that native Americans were a “degraded people” and thought that meant he was a racist rather than accepting that in the 1700’s that was fairly mild language and not racially motivated at all (by 1700s standards I suppose… rather than 2000’s extreme left, California student standards)…
