You're right, the earth has been spinning for a long time and will keep going after it's spat us out. But that's not what were talking about here. Nor are we talking about today's climate versus any time hundreds of millions of years ago.

Climate change is about what's happening now. And rapidly. The rate of change now is extraordinary. It's deeply concerning in terms of temperature and weather effects upon the people, animals and plants that inhabit the planet now.

'However, there is nothing as efficient as the modern combustion engine and likely never will be.' Eek! Um, there's so many things I could say, but I'll settle on 'Really?' :-D I suggest you write a book with that as the title and make a lot of money, from folk who are fascinated by combustion engines (including me) and from technologists who will want to find out what substances this scientist has been using. :)

As primary school kids we watched a cartoon about a detective called Dick Tracey. His team used wrist watches with little TV screens to talk to each other. We loved this but none of us ever thought it would happen. In the year 2003 I was at a conference where a renowned futurologist discussed the consensus view amongst his peers. One was, in 2035 we will start to see people receiving computer chips installed in their brains. Wrong by 10 years.
I remember in the early 70s in school being taught that the earth was cooling and this was due to all the pollution being introduced into the air. This was blocking the sunlight causing global cooling. In the early 80s we were told that chlorine was causing the earth to lose ozone and increasing the likelihood of skin cancer. When mount Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in 1991 it was estimated that more chlorine entered the atmosphere in one week than the world could produce in a thousand years. Global warming was the rage in the late 90s, this phrase is not used anymore since it has not gotten noticeably warmer in the last 20 years. Now it’s called climate change, if it gets warmer or colder, if we have more or less hurricanes if rains too much or there is a drought it’s climate change. The solution is alway for the government to take more of your money, have more control over your life, punish industry and redistribute wealth. The Paris climate accord was simply a redistribution of wealth. If you truly believe that fossil fuels are ending human civilization then lead by example, do not drive, do not fly, don’t heat or air condition your home. I think I will go light a cigar.

These climate change idiots make good cannon fodder.
If they really want to make change they will revoke their own birth certificate thereby protecting the environment and saving the planet.

If you truly believe that fossil fuels are ending human civilization ...
Thanks for this. You've highlighted the problem. You've used the word 'believe'.

'Believe' is for religion, other cults and some football fans. 'Despite all indications to the contrary, I believe we're gonna win this year.'

Scientists do not use the words 'believe' or 'not believe'. Climate scientists do research, assess the results, then present their conclusions for review by expert peers. If it all holds up, it's published and adds to our knowledge. You can be thankful for this process when the wings of your plane don't fall off. Or when the drugs pumped into your wife's veins cure her cancer. Believing is not relevant.

Research. Results. Conclusions. Considerations. Decisions. These matter. What you believe is irrelevant.

Yes and it’s hard to reason with once proud countries and cultures reduced to begging for their defense. A *fine* example of European manhood, indeed.
I guess we’ll end up taking working class kids from Beaumont and Pittsburgh and the Bronx to do it instead.
Simple. Give Ukraine the weapons your kids would be using and your kids can stay home.

Russia, unprovoked, invaded a sovereign nation. The blood of this war is on the hands of Putin.
I see that you've edited 'unprecedented' back to 'unprovoked', the word your fingers were going for. Bloody autocorrect. In this context, there's quite a difference in meaning and accuracy between the two. Thank you. :)

Conclusions are drawn from facts, I do not “believe” the earth is warming from the presentation of evidence, the mistake you make is “believing” that everyone should agree with you. “Man made climate change” is a code word for socialism. If the facts clearly pointed for a coming catastrophe as you claim then I would be onboard. I agree with you on this point, what I believe is irrelevant as is your beliefs. Everyone should look at the evidence and make their own decision. Start with your own life and lead by example if this is important to you. What changes are you making to interrupt the catastrophic chain of events. I think I will have another cigar.

I was mortified when I saw 'unprecedented'; that is NOT what I typed. I despise autocorrect.

Your point is valid, just as most if us are willing to spend money to do things that we are not prepared/willing to do ourselves (remove teeth, representation in court, re-wire rooms, etc.).
There’s also an argument to be made that that obligation has already been fulfilled with services/supplies rendered.
Consequently, it can also be rationally argued that your position is without merit, as there is no defense treaty between the US and Ukraine.
I think part of what is lost in this discussion is that the U.S. just had an election where the current administration won a mandate. The President won a decided victory in both the electoral college and popular vote. The President’s Cabinet is clearly standing solidly behind him. The President’s party has narrow majorities in both houses of the legislature.
All of this happened without his platform including concrete guarantees to Ukraine. I’m not saying that I agree with that policy, I’m saying that we need to face reality on reality’s terms.

Donald Tusk, PM of Poland

I thought it was brilliant. Finally, a European leader saying, 'C'mon guys. Let's get our shit together. We can do this on our own, easily.' An excellent development and a necessary one.

If coming inside out of the rain can be considered “brilliant,” then I guess it was brilliant.

Why should we give Ukraine anything?
"Because it is your pleasure." - Lawrence of Arabia to Auda ibu Tayi.

That is, because it suits you. To maintain America's position as the pre-eminent power in the world, along with being a power for good. To stop WWIII from spooling up. To stop dictators doing whatever they wish.

Of course, if you want the opposite outcome to be far more likely, don't give weapons to Ukraine. From what you do, we will see what it is that is your pleasure. Right now, it appears to be up in the air.

I voted to stop giving money to the UN, NATO, and don’t care what happens to Europe.

Europe can solve its own problems with its own money and people. My pleasure is in fixing the American economy from within. Until Russia, China, or whomever is at the Mexican or Canadian border I couldn’t care less.

If we gain access to unfettered mineral rights in Ukraine then I would begrudgingly give whatever was agreed to in a treaty but not one penny more. Twice we’ve saved Europe only to be treated like fecal matter by a lot of Europeans.

I voted to stop incurring debt. I voted for a return to the Constitutional principles our nation was founded on and a smaller federal government. I voted for State’s Rights. I voted for isolationism or barring that more favorable trade terms.

Those are my pleasures.

You voted for a return to the old days.

What you will get is a close up view of America fading.

No.
A return to self sufficiency.
That ship has sailed along with 45 RPM records. We are looking to steal Ukraine’s natural resources because we are not self sufficient. It is a global economy whether you like it or not. Ignore it at your peril as a country. You wouldn’t be able to post here without imported stuff.

You know what I meant. There’s not another power system as efficient to power large jets, trucks, tractors, combines, etc… than the internal combustion and jet engines. I’m not talking about watches and computers. In most of Europe, the vast expanses of the Great Plains and our large farms and ranches does not exist. We need large equipment to work these farms and pickup trucks and even larger trucks to move millions of cattle and other livestock every day. The large vehicles and equipment we need will NEVER work with battery power. Most Europeans can get by with your small little cars, small vans and little trucks on your tiny streets in your more urbanized society. Most Europeans don’t have experience with our large agricultural industry operations and more rural lifestyle. And please answer how trains can replace air travel? It’s not possible and doesn’t make sense.

You know what I meant.
It was the 'and likely never will be' part that got my attention. Because of science, we'll see many things that are or were in the 'never will be' camp.

And big ships. What to do about them? The answer is hydrogen. Transported, delivered and carried in the form of ammonia. Made with sunlight from seawater. Ultimately recyclable. Easily integrated with current infrastructure. Yay. It's the next gold rush.

I will believe it when I see it.

Yes I’d buy a hydrogen powered truck. Wasn’t the moon buggy powered by hydrogen. People say oh but it will explode! Yes maybe but so dose most fuel…..mind you it’s better than running around and having to keep putting it out like these EV cars in LA that we’re destroyed in the fires.

I doubt you are interested in any trades but I was getting ready to list a Sauer 404 3 barrel set in the 10-12 price range if your interested. It has the 404J, 30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Only the 30-06 had been shot and it has 7 rounds through it as I was working on breaking the barrel in. It also has both the synthetic thumbhole stock and somewhere between grade 3-5 non thumbhole stock
