Meanwhile in China, a real estate related banking crises is looming:

Banking crisis, Real Estate Crisis, Population Crisis all coming to a head. This will hurt American fund holders to the tune of 100's of billions of $. Anyone with retirement funds exposed to China should be making arrangements now if they haven't already.

It seems more and more obvious that Putin is flogging his commanders to achieve some sort of victory before the election to make it a triumphal extension of power. For almost two months, the Russian army has hurled tanks, armored fighting vehicles, and now primarily infantry at Ukrainian positions around Adiivka in particular. This short bit of footage is along the forward edge of the battlefield (FEBA) in the Ukrainian 110th Mechanized Infantry Brigade. The red tags do not begin to capture all the dead Russian troops.

Also, note their is little to no effort made to retrieve them. This has been going on since the start of the war and appears to be part of the Kremlin's efforts to hide the actual casualty count. The longer this goes on, the more likely that strategy will hit a tipping point.

“before the election” What election? You mean the one(s) where Putin wins every time no matter what? Nothing more than another example of Putin’s propaganda machine feeding the Western politicians that falsely believe some sort of future relationship with Putin’s Russia is still possible.

My experience is primarily with small unit tactics, so the dynamics of national strategies are not my forte, but, it seems to me that there is a third option- seeing what the US could do to impede Russia and Iran in their funding of the two wars. Had the Trump energy & trade policies been left in place neither nation would have had the funds to prosecute the wars and if they were reinstituted today I do believe the length of both wars would be significantly reduced.
Exactly. Republicans do not support Russia, and this is nothing more than a continuation of the "Russia Collusion" fraud that the Democrats and their media allies have peddled for the last 6+ years. Obama refused to allow any large weapons to be sold to Ukraine, and Trump reversed that Obama policy starting in 2017 by selling Javelin missiles to Ukraine, yet somehow Trump and the Republicans are at fault?

Looks like the DC case is stalled at best.

@JonathanTurley

Judge Chutkan just put a hold on further proceedings in the federal case against Trump. Smith has worked doggedly to keep the trial scheduled for just before Super Tuesday. This could endanger that date and make it more difficult to try Trump before the election...

A bit more explanation by Shipley regarding the DC trial.

Some very seasoned and smart attorneys on the liberal side of the spectrum allowed their personal and partisan desires to cloud objective judgments on "nuts and bolts" issues of federal criminal procedure. They were Captain Ahab and having a trial in the spring of 2024 was their "White Whale." There were always many opportunities for Trump to derail the trial schedule, and he has now done so. I think the Trump defense played this exactly correctly -- they complained about the trial schedule so they had a record of having done so. They then went about trying to comply with the deadlines with some unstated confidence that the schedule would eventually crash upon the rocks of pretrial issues that would cause delays. The decision by SCOTUS this morning to take up the challenge to Sec. 1512 -- with 2 of the 4 counts charged against Trump being connected to that charge -- was the final straw. There is no reason now for SCOTUS to expedite the appeal of the immunity issue. While the cases are different, both will have a huge impact on what happens with the DC case if/when it ever gets to trial. So SCOTUS can deal with both on parallel tracks with similar schedules. Oral arguments at the end of April and decisions at the end of June is the most likely result.THEN an entirely new scheduling order will be necessary in the case -- if there still is a case. That new schedule will bump up against the FL case which I expect will be reset for mid-to-late summer. The issue will be whether the DC case will be set in the fall of 2024 during the middle of the general election campaign. My guess would be -- "No."

Republicans absolutely own it if our military support to Ukraine falters. They, and no one else in this country, will have become partners in Putin's efforts to resurrect the Russian empire. We should all feel really proud about that should it happen.

...

Then.. we had to deal with the contracting officer of another agency we do business with throwing a hissy fit because our project manager, after emailing the contracting officer 4 times over a 2 week period and calling her twice.. with zero replies or return calls, asked the COR/Contracting Officer Representative a question about a lack of funding that is going to create a potential work stoppage if the government doesnt take corrective action very quickly.. She went ballistic basically because she looked bad for not answering emails or phone calls for 2 weeks (even though that was never mentioned to the COR) and didnt like being exposed... not because her incompetence and refusal to actually do some work for a change was about to put a VERY ESSENTIAL, highly sensitive program at risk of work stoppage...

...

Reminds me of the time where I was called unprofessional because I informed the Army Corps of Engineers' contracting officer that we were stopping work unless all of overdue invoices got paid.

Our scope was less than 10% of the overall project but it was all the instrumentation, controllers and software without which nothing could go online. We did get paid, and all future invoices were paid in a timely manner afterwards.

You once accused me perhaps correctly of posting a "profane screed".
I would say the same of your post without the profanity.
So I guess putting American border security ahead of Ukraine border security makes Republicans Putin defenders?
Over the top nonsense.

The oil industry is the same. People bitch and moan about oil company profits, but the returns are such that most don’t include them in their 401K portfolio.
And when things go south, the oil patch can bankrupt you.

Got to love the digs (very accurate ones) at both the Obama and Trump administrations with respect to strategic decision making.
I'm pretty sure Zeihan is familiar with Unrestricted Warfare by Colonels Qiao Lang and Wang Xiangsui (as well as anyone taking this stuff seriously should be) but I still don't think him and many of our leaders are being as creative as they need to be in regards to dealing with the China issue as a whole.
For instance what happens when the CCP puts 150k random citizens in PLA uniforms and has them "surrender" to the US on day 1 of active hostilities in this shooting war scenario he's discussing? Then another 150k, then another.... maybe 1 out of 50 is a legit soldier or whatever that acts as a handler for the rest. Where do they put them? Guam? Okinawa? Darwin?

In this "shooting war with China" scenario I imagine other countries would potentially get involved, how do we deal with the homeland threat? Garden plot 2.0?

This is obviously hypothetical, but over the years there's been a whole lot of "that won't happen" and "we have the human terrain mapped and figured out" that has proven to be completely off the mark. US failure in Afghanistan is probably the easiest example, but you can say the same about the number of coups we've seen across the African continent or this latest Hamas attack.

With all respect, I say that Democrats own the 8 years of Obama withholding lethal aid to Ukraine. This is why the war has gone the way it has. If
Ukraine had been able to build it's military 12 years ago, like it wanted to, it would be a completely different War.

You cannot build a Military Force of any quality after the start of a war, only before. Trying to build a small Army to defeat a larger enemy AFTER the War starts, is like trying to build a smaller boxer up to defeat a larger opponent AFTER the boxing match has started. The skill, muscle and endurance needed must be built YEARS in advance. Obama and the Democrats denied Ukraine this chance to build itself. That is a far bigger factor in all wars, and Democrats clearly own that mistake.

I consider myself to be a Republican slightly to the Right of Ronald Reagan. I do not support Russia in any way, shape or form. I do however, have a problem with a political party withholding aid when a Country can pay for it, then giving aid and money Willy Nilly as the former Vice President, now current President, and his corrupt son skim off millions.

Hunter Biden was on the Board of directors of Burisma, a Russian oil and gas Company in Ukraine, despite having no knowledge or training in this area. This is not conspiracy, it is fact. The Biden s were taking a cut of every taxpayer dollar sent while Joe was Vice President. There is every indication that he is still receiving his cut. "10% for the Big Guy." as Hinter Biden s business partner stated.

As it is now, no matter how little or how much aid we send, neither Russia or Ukraine can shift the balance. There will be no winner in this war. It will remain a stalemate and each side will keep the territory it has now.

Let me give you some actual history rather than your musings. Since 2014, Ukraine has participated in some form or another in every major NATO exercise in Europe. Even before that, Ukrainian officers deployed to Afghanistan to serve alongside American and NATO colleagues in the field. Using the US and British model over the last decade, they have created a modern military schooling system and NCO development program. NCOs that are directing the close combat fight every day in Ukraine. By February of '22, they had far more in common professionally with the US Army than they ever had with the Russians. Friends, colleagues, and protégés of mine have developed and stewarded that effort. All they now need is the means.

The Biden administration has been far to slow and far to cautious in what they have supplied the UA. Ukraine wants no American troops or advisors - they simply want the means to defeat Russia. Your comment about "willy nilly" aid is completely uninformed. They have received the right materiel, simply not in adequate quantity or with adequate timeliness. But with that limited amount they have fought Russia to a stand still and driven them from over half the territory initially occupied - all in less than two years. WWI lasted four, WWII went on for six, and Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq far longer. I think they are doing pretty well in comparison.

The republican neo-isolationist response is to cut them off completely. I consider myself a Reagan conservative and he would be appalled by Donald Trump, his foreign policy and those that support it. He believed in strongly defending US national interests wherever they were threatened. It is hard to find a more direct threat than a resurgent Russia again looming over Europe - yes, likely even greater than China, because our European sources of posterity are so much more vulnerable than the Pacific. I am embarrassed anyone in my party supports the strategic goals of the Russian Federation.

Finally, @Hunt anything is exactly right. In both 1917 and 1941/42 we created the armed forces necessary to achieve victory in two world wars. In Ukraine, the correlation of forces continues to steadily shift in Ukraine's favor. Only in American could a political party be so ignorant and so weak as to seize such a defeat from the jaws of victory.

The below clip is from the area fronting the 110th Mechanized Infantry Brigade in the vicinity of Avdiivka. The Russians have been trying to achieve a victory their for six weeks. Initial attacks were with tanks and AFVs, due to catastrophic losses, those attacks are now largely unsupported infantry. These are Russian dead. The marker can't even keep up with all of them. The Russians make little effort to recover them as they try to hide the scale of their losses. All the Ukrainians are asking for is the means to continue killing them and securing their right to live as a free people.

I would suggest another bit of history to study. It doesn't repeat, but there are parallels. Had France, at far greater cost, not supported us in our fight for independence, we would both be living in a commonwealth today.

Over the top nonsense? Didn't like it did you? I think I was exactly correct. So will history.

Republicans and only republicans will be responsible for halting military support for Ukraine. The border and Ukraine are two separate national security issues. I think you are smart enough and educated enough to realize that.

It also should be apparent that a large portion of the Republican party, purely for political purposes, has decided it is in their interests to conflate the two. I hope it is worth it. Every Ukrainian civilian or soldier who dies as a result of any delay in support is on my party's hands.
