Planning First African Hunt

Hello Slick and welcome. Depending upon your budget and time you may want to go for the juggular and get yourself a double rifle and make this first buffalo hunt very special. It will take lots of practice to get to know your rifle and practice on shooting buffalo targets too. It would be a journey, but an exciting and enjoyable one. There are several reasonable doubles that also come in light weight frames in 375H&H like the Heym 89b or the Chapuis Iphisi. You can either fit a red dot sight as I have or a small scope, but the rifle maker will need to know about that up front. We could fill pages on this subject, perhaps we will!

https://www.gunbroker.com/item/956147047 - .375 Ruger - these are really nice guns for the price point - ammo is harder to find in Africa, so you might consider a traditional .375 H&H like this one: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/956734235 - The Sako is a nicer gun in my opinion, but my guess is that gun will end up selling for closer to 2 grand when it is done

Two more pieces of advice, use a travel agent, and review the airline's firearms policies prior to departure.

Welcome. Great wealth of knowledge here on this forum. If we can be any assistance with anything feel free to ask away.

Welcome! The first safari planning is always fun. Many great sponsors here that will work with you. I have hunted 4 safaris with Bos en Dal give them a look. I have taken 4 great Buffalo bulls with them. Only 2 1/2 hour drive from Johannesburg.

Welcome Slick3006 to AH. Lots of info and lots of guns are sold on this site. Be aware of encouragement to buy lots of guns.

Welcome Slick, this is a great forum to hang out with lots of knowledgeable hunters. BTW, you have a private message from me.

Gunsinternational has a Winchester Model 70 in 375 H&H:

I think this is the kind of rifle that would serve anyone well…novice and expert alike. There are pricier options…some that are MUCH fancier…but very few that are any better for a safari.

Welcome Slick! Lots of great info here.

I just hunted buffalo with Game 4 Africa in September, had a nice hunt, got a nice buffalo. I hunted this past May with Tsala Safaris, great place to hunt buffalo. My other cape buffaloes were taken in Zimbabwe. One thing to consider when looking to book an African safari is logistics of getting where you need to go. With Tsala, they are just 2 hours north of Johannesburg, so you can land there, they pick you up, you will be in camp in 2 hours. On this last trip I had to overnight in Johannesburg, then fly on to Port Elizabeth the next day. That adds a day of travel, cost of the nights stay and flight on to Port Elizabeth, plus all the f'ing around with that extra flight. You do enough research, you'll soon figure it out. Sorting out where to hunt is half the fun for me!!
+1

Welcome Slick, what brand and model rifle are you looking for and what is your budget?

Good evening,

I’ve been looking at CZ 550s and the newer Winchester model 70’s-which are scarce as hen‘s teeth. I’ve seen a couple of Rugers and today I spoke with a guy about a Rem 700 that he doesn’t shoot anymore.

Basically, I’m looking under $2500. I want a rifle that is dependable and shoots well-just like everyone else. Hahahaha. Also, I’m not in a rush. I want to see what type of outfitters I meet in Nashville.

Steve
