I have a pelican 1750 double rifle case that works great. I want to buy extra meddle foam inserts to make multiple rifle configurations. Online, you can of course buy factor replacement for $$$ or third part sellers seem to be selling the same for $. Has anyone bought spare third party foam inserts to comment on the quality?

I bought the closed cell sheets of foam from Amazon - $65 a sheet, not exactly cheap but it was perfect for cutting out the exact rifle form and staying put.

I found a local foam supplier and requested the same density of foam and created the inserts I needed. They work just fine to this day.
It was a lot of research to track down something local but the product and price were right.

I did the same thing, only just took the densest stuff they had locally. It works just fine. Traced the rifle and cut out a fitted space for it.

I read a suggestion another AH member made and that was to buy an inexpensive memory foam mattress topper and use it for the outer foam layers (top and bottom layer). The 3 pieces of foam that come with a Pelican rifle case can then be used to custom cut for the middle layer for a single or double rifle set up.

Lots of other suggestions on an earlier thread on the same topic

Just bought some from Foam Factory for my pelican, many options to choose from and they will cut to size. Much cheaper than Amazon or other sellers.

$47 for two 2 inch sheets of “firm” including shipping.

No matter what, use a foam with enough density/stiffness that the gun is held securely during rough handling. Not all foam is created equal. Additionally, the lid foam should slightly compress the gun when closed which also means the gun should sit a little proud in the bottom foam. If it sits below grade in the bottom foam it will rattle around and not be secure no matter the compression of the lid foam.

Pic of my regular bolt gun broken down and in my Pelican 1700- I used the barreled-action profile piece removed from the mid (bottom) foam and glued it to the lid foam to increase compression when lid is closed. The stock is not massive enough to move around during rough handling but the barreled action is. Inspectors have no issues checking this set up for serial numbers, etc. Make it easy for them- a good plan. Make it hard for them to inspect- not a good plan.

I actually saved what I cut out and put it back in. Then I took either the top or bottom foam and made a different rifle configuration out of it and placed it in the middle.

Cobra Foam Inserts will custom die cut the foam they sell you to exactly fit your rifle. Just take a picture of the gun or gear positioned in your case. You get foam with a precise cutout for whatever gun or gear you will have in the case. $65 plus the cost of the foam. Not cheap but good.

If you are careful cutting the foam, you can reassemble it and then move it to the top, move the top to the middle and cut another config.

Just moving to DM. Yes, please ask your friend if he knows somebody who might be willing to support a persistent hunt in the snow.
