Packing For Safari - My Video

Great job on the video Phillip, I’m thinking a star is born between trophy the film and now this.......seems like someone is interviewing for a new hunting show on outdoor channel? Lol. But seriously why the wool neck gaitor? I always pack one for cold climate hunts but hot climate?

Johnny
The neck gaiter was my best piece of gear other than my Gun on this trip. Being able to cover up to keep the flies and gnats out of your ears and nose was essential. Then there was smoke everyday from the fires we were setting. Additionally we walked through burned ground daily where the ash would be chocking us. Being able to breathe through the wool neck gaiter saved my sinuses. I would have been miserable on this trip without my Kuiu merino wool neck gaiter.
Thanks for your encouragement!
Philip

Phil, great video - especially for us first-timers! Quick question; your gun case appears to be an SKB. Did you remove the styrofoam insulation below the egg crate foam in the bottom of your case? There's no way I could get all of that gear in my SKB! I can barely close the case with just my .375 in it.

Cool video. Would have been very helpful before my first trip in 2017!

Very similar to the way I've learned to do it and lots of good info in there. I like the idea of removing the middle foam and packing the rifle in a soft case the packing the soft case in the hard case. I'll probably try that next time.

What happened to the beard?!?

I have the Pelican case. Yes I take one layer of foam out, put the gun into a soft case and fill the rest of the space with other gear. Works pretty well. That case has been around the world!

Yea I exited the beard club. Getting a lot of crap about it but there is a time for everything. Actually with the film controversies I was glad to be incognito.

Thanks for making the video! After watching, I realized we do most of the same things, but you put it into a watchable, succinct formula. I also use a lot of Zip-lok bags and zip-ties. I imagine if you made this again today you would emphasize hand sanitizer?

Excellent video ! I packed a lot of my clothes in with the bow for added protection .
Thanks Glen

Great video, thanks for putting it together. I picked up several things, for sure.

Am I mistaken or did I read on here somewhere that you can’t pack clothes, etc in your rifle case? I had planned on getting a Tuffpak case for the extra room but got the SDK instead based on reading that somewhere.

There are some European airlines that have some rules like this. From what I can gather they don't want the gun obscured like you are trying to hide something. I have traveled many places with my Pelican 2 gun case with one gun and some gear not clothes in it. As always check with a travel agent for the latest rules/nonsense from the airlines!

Bows are considered or were in 2011 to be sports equipment ... not firearms . Just thought it was worth mentioning .

Hi Philip.

Do you remove the bolt from your rifle - where does it end up in the gun case?

Thanks again for putting this together.
Joe

Not normally. I have on a typical bolt gun and put it in pocket on soft case. On the Blaser I’ve used the Blaser Pelican case and then yes it completely disassembles. I am paranoid about losing a bolt so I would not remove it unless needed.
Thanks
Philip

How big can the backpack be and still be allowed as a carry on bag?

Pre packing mine (I think it's a 15L) and coming up well under the minimum needed.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
