Overnight safety

After a 23-30 hr flight/ travel I wouldn’t want to get in a vehicle for a 9-10 hr drive to a camp in the Eastern Cape but would really enjoy after the hunt renting a car and taking a leisurely 2-3 day drive back to Johannesburg for a return flight home.

After flying all the way to JoBurg and clearing SAP, the last thing I want is to get in a car to go somewhere else just to turn around and drive back to the airport in the morning. At that point I just want a shower and a bed. City Lodge for me.

Doing safari to EC soon and was wondering what the more experienced ah community feels is best when it comes to overnighting in joberg, safety being of upmost concern.
You can contact Afton House and have them meet and greet you, handle your rifle permits, take you to Afton, feed you Supper and then breakfast, deliver you to the airport and help you through checking your guns back in and get you checked it and up to security for you flight.

If you go that route, have a look at my elephant trophies and bontebok at Afton House:)

And City Lodge is an option as well, a little less cost but on your own for supper. If you go that way, hire Henry from @riflepermits.com to do your rifle import paperwork and tip the helper to get you and your bags to the elevator to City Lodge. Then tip the bell hop to take you to check in.

Afton or their competition Africa Sky is a bit more full service and gives you more of a Old Africa experience.

I have stayed at Africa Sky a few times. They are wonderful! I need to go and stay at Afton so I can see my husband's trophies (@ActionBob ) in person!
Good Luck! :)

Can’t get any safer than City Lodge which is attached to the airport. Neat place with good food.

While I know Africa Sky has upped their security, because of a robber jumping the wall and getting into it was a customer. Stay at the airport, City Lodge, Intercontinental or Protea Transit if eligible.

Of course both Johan and Ivan were both there when I was there.

I've stayed at both Afton House and Africa Sky, they are both great places to stay, and felt secure in the area. Africa Sky I believe is closer to the airport.

Meet & greet and stay at one of the recommended lodges sounds like a very good idea to me.

Stayed at City Lodge in 2017, checked in, ordered wake up call, went up to my room and threw all my gear in and headed out to go to a recommended restaurant but I was tired, so changed my mind and went back to my room to have a little power nap. I had just shut my eyes when I hear careful knocking on the door and I replied, apparently not loud enough,,then I hear a key in the lock and I dived out of bed, tore the door open with this uniformed guy hanging on it, he backed off mumbling something probably crapping his pants, and the he ran away...
So, there would definitely not be any dining out that night..thats for sure!
I travel with expensive and totally irreplaceable gear, so slightly paranoid I know but...
The next morning, no wake up call, as expected.
I see a lot of guys recommend them, but, they are never gonna see me again.

I have stayed at all above mentioned places and agree all are amazing. We "locked down" at Airport Hotel for our mandatory 14 days last year and they gave us excellent rates and strict regulated service. We all had Delta.

I think it depends what you want from your stay, a quick overnight with food and sleep in hotel with early connection, or something more Africa, plants, lizards, nesting weavers, pool and courtyard. I always add a few days before and after to ease the what ifs from flights so I want the later. I will also state that all mentioned places cost 2x more than any hotel/motel that I stay in here at home.

I have no idea of OP's financial situation or duration of expected stay but we stayed at the Sunrock Guest House last Sept, pic up and drop off at airport, amazing place, totally safe, private individual rooms with decks, not hotel like, food spectacular, hunter friendly, their trophy room has life-size giraffe, gym and bar area rivals any and all for 1/3 cost of places mentioned. The owners went above and beyond to look after us, took us to outdoor carving mall, and a tour of Joberg, as a bonus there were some somewhat famous other hunters and PH's staying there, a beer and chat with people I see on TV and in magazines (SCI) was a bonus.

There are a ton of options in Joberg, just depends on what you are looking for. I will be returning to Sunrock, more of what I go to Africa for.

We use Africa Sky. They are outstanding. They will handle you permits, VIP meet and greet, 5 star dining and amazing ambience. A little bit of old Africa 10 minutes from the airport.
Sounds great.

My go to is Afton Guest House. I first stayed with them in 2010 or 11 and its never let me down. They are waiting on you when you arrive just after picking up your luggage and its an easy ride not far from airport. I'll be there in a couple days.

I will +1 Afton House as well. Africa Sky is a little more upsacle, but you get a better hunter vibe at Afton Safari House based on my experience as Africa Sky has probably more photo safari people than Afton which is almost exclusively hunters.

As for dinner, go to Jose's. They have excellent steak and incredibly cheap prices by our standards. Last time I went, I got a 36 ounce T-bone for USD $12.40 and it was delicious.

Afton House hands down. Was hoping to stay this trip but the PH wants to head out directly from the airport and make the long drive at night so we can hunt first thing in the morning.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
