Opinion on this .270

Hi,

I hope I'm not making a new member mistake and posting this in the wrong place.

I've been looking to buy a new .270 and found this on Cabelas website. https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/101694391 I would really like to have a what looks to be a fairly early FN such as this one, but it seems pretty steep on the price. I've found some good deals at Cabelas, and other times wanted to ask for some of what they're smoking.

What category does anyone think this falls in?

Please point out any errors I may have made in posting this.

Definitely a bit more than what I have seen these FNs go for generally, but that is a nice example. Not a great deal, but if its what you are looking for that is a nice rifle. The cutout for the receiver sight, a bit of pitting visible, and a few marks on the stock are the negatives from what I see. Nice figure and color in the stock.

I think I'll put it on my watch list and see if they move on the price. I wish it was local to me so I could handle it. I'd even be willing to pay a reasonable transfer fee to have it shipped to my local to do so. However, Cabela's won't do a store to store transfer unless you purchase.

Those FNs are extremely high quality rifles. To match that in a currently made rifle would cost several thousand dollars. Looks like a great buy to me.

Fairly certain other than the nominal transfer fee, if you don't like the gun, they will refund the purchase price.

I have the heavy barreled version of this rifle in the same caliber, with a serial number about ~3000 or so later than this one. They are fantastic rifles, timeless styling, great shooters, and well balanced. I would recommend replacing the two-stage M98 trigger with a Timney, but otherwise it's good to go. The price does seem a bit high for those models. If I really wanted it, I'd probably offer sub-2/3 of that price. Otherwise it looks like a great catch!

That being said, a rifle of that quality in today's world is easily going to reach that price point. I guess it depends on which point of view you choose. Good luck

If you’re specifically looking for a used FN 270 there are several on gunsinternational for quite a bit less, I think some from Bass Pro and also several FN Browning Safari 270’s for less, same and more. The FN Browning Safaris were made in Belgium same as the FN’s. I think an FN Deluxe is similar to an FN Browning Safari. The rifle you posted seems somewhat high.
