One Last Elephant Hunt - Changes In The Wind

Can anyone run by me what "All Inclusive" typically means or includes.

Many thanks!
Hi again Dan,
Concerning “all inclusive” I am just going to refer the question. “Look it up in the dictionary”.

What else can I say Dan?

Lon & Liesl, I am so excited for this upcoming adventure with you and I certainly am super grateful that y’all are providing such an incredible hunt at an affordable price! I admittedly was a little skeptical when I first read the advertisement as I have been pricing other Zimbabwe and Botswana elephant hunts extensively and found only a couple close in price but mostly all quite a bit more expensive. But after speaking to you and Liesl and a couple of your past clients I knew you were genuine, experienced professionals who pride themselves on providing a great hunt and experience. I already respect that about y’all immensely and cannot wait until we’re putting in the work together on what is a bucket list adventure for me!
Hi Mark, looking forward to having you. Forgot to mention. Laundry done daily Cold nights, mornings cold. Days nice.. leaves off trees.

I would love to go as well but time is not on my side! If it’s available in the future I will definitely go.

On a side note what is your opinion of using a 375 Ruger on Ele? Brain shot only or can a body shot work?
Hi,
.375 H&H or Ruger. I preter .40 or larger, when things goes bad. Then I would prefer a hell of a lot bigger.

Lon

Yes. @Tokoloshe Safaris, Lon, just omit the outfitters', clients', and PHs' names. PHs do have stories to tell about previous clients. Stories about the unusual (rather odd chap), the PITA first timers comparison challenge, the (nationalities with held) that usually show up as a group, the conscientious hunter comparison challenge, the worst of the worst client of the year award comparison challenge, and many more categories.

Back before the pandemic on my first 2 safaris to Africa the lodge would be host to 4 or 5 "parties" / groups / hunters, which to me as a lone hunter/ client made for a much more "interesting" stay. I would hang around the social area of the lodge with the PHs well after the other clients had retired for the night to get an insight on various things the PHs did.

Things like trade concession hunts; ie. A PH may have permission to hunt a variety of concessions loaded with impala, springbok, blesbok, etc , but no quality warthogs and a client wanting a warthog. Another PH's client has added a second impala but this PH has filled his concessions quotas for impala. They make the necessary arrangements with the concession owners to allow the PHs to exchange.

Phs critique themselves and other PHs. PHs ask for peer assistance when the respective client(s) aren't "measuring up" or "preforming" as expected; ie., spending more time drinking than hunting, and/or the client(s) can't shoot accurately out to a 100 yards, etc..

Perhaps a collaboration of several PHs from several outfitters to write a 3 volume set:

1) The Good, insight on the more humorous stories of PH - Client interactions

2) The Ugly, insight on the worst stories, problem clients PHs have had to deal with

3) The Bad, insight on misadventures:

Successful:

Weather, vegetation, clients physical / health condition(s), terrain, client shoots with multiple misses at same animal before making the kill shot. Regardless the client is successful in getting their animals.

Not So Successful:

Started out normal, then: flat tire on bakkie, client brought wrong ammo, client didn't chamber a cartridge, etc. client kills hunted species, not the specific animal the PH had planned. PH must resort to backing up the client on PG, etc., but client succeeds in getting all of their animals.

Drastic Outcome:

Client is an extremely poor shot. Client fails to listen to PH. Client shoots through one animal and killing a second. Client shoots wrong sex animal, or correct species not intended animal; ie. Shot the male on the left, target animal was on the right. Shoots female or male target animal was male or female of hunted species, etc. Client refuses or limits the PH's effort(s) to follow up on a wounded animal to hunt a second same species animal. Client(s) that prefer to "Party Hearty" rather than hunt or minimize their hunting time with the end result of not getting all of their animals.

As clients this type of book collection of PH tales would, or should, give us a better perspective on how we conduct ourselves as guest and try not to be "one of those" type client.
I would like to mention one bad client so bad he would not allowed back.

In our remote camp we have starlink. This enables phone and internet coms. The client booked a multi DG hunt. He took his elephant second day. From that time on he would not he would not leave camp except for acouple of hours.

Why internet porn. All day all night porn and maybe a couple hours sleep. Two different good leopard on bait. Nice 44” dagga boy.

The grand finale was him describing his 16 yr old daughter having sex in front of his guests at hi xmas party. This was at the dinner table.
We lost our ass on that hunt.

Lon

If I could swing it, I'd be there in a heartbeat.

That was my dream & direction. Medical squashed .. everything, for now. That's generous, however.

He just as well stay at the lodge watching porn. After telling the story about his daughter at the Christmas party that slimy SOB would have been seriously at risk of a "hunting accident" the next day if I'd been in camp. Croc food. You could have made up for the lost trophy fees selling lottery tickets for the privilege of making it happen.

Many thanks!
Given I did this hunt back in April it was literally $6,000 day rates and $9,000 trophy fee. the only thing not included was my cash tip. that’s all

Love this offer on so many levels. I'm over committed at the moment but the brain is swirling

Wtf. Should have shut the internet off.

That dude needs to fall in a croc filled hippo pool.

I would have strung him up as leopard bait.

I am very interested you have rates the working man can work with how about next year or later this year Kevin Erickson.

I would get up during the night, armed knowing things were not right and find him on elephant trails looking for the best signal. We consider wandering around at night as a serious safety offense.

He wanted to come back the next year saying he wanted to take his leopard and that he had paid a daily fee and for baits the previous year he should only have to pay for trophy.

I did the right thing him back to the aiport. What I would have liked to have done is have made a phone call to a certain Zimbabwe very high ranking police official and tell him he might want to have a look at his computer. It would have taken about two minutes for them to get the password. Of course if someone googled porn zimbabwe, our company name would pop up.

Wow. Pervert AND crazy! He must have been born to money. No one that messed up could ever be a success in business. So you cut the safari short and sent him home? My first (and still favorite) PH came very close to sending a young client home for essentially the same reason. I told Glen to keep an eye on me and don't be afraid to put me in line if needed. I spent a lifetime solo hunting and this would be unfamiliar ground in every respect. At lunch he told me about the client who fashioned himself a solo hunting superman because he'd spent a decade sitting in whitetail deer stands and hunting turkeys. The guy insisted on hunting alone in Africa. Glen said that's not how it's done. Client gets hot about it: his money, he'll do what he wants, blah, blah. Glen asked to check his gun, unloaded it, and told him to get back in the truck. "You can change your flight when we get back to the lodge." At the lodge the owner was able to make the client see reality. Do what you're told or you're gone. He did finish the safari but Glen said he pouted like a six year-old the entire time.

Life is about dealing with sketchy people: on the job, on the bus, in the supermarket, even at church. But how do you deal with sketchy people when guns are involved? That's gotta be challenging. In combat soldiers sometimes come unhinged but they are typically comrades. You do what you can for comrades. But those trainees who go into combat without all their marbles usually don't last long ... one way or another. When guns are in play, mutual trust is essential.

Lon if I didn't already have a elephant hunt for next year booked and this year have two trips I would have already sent you $$$$. Somebody needs to jump on this safari.

I’m amazed yet again at your ability inject class/money into any topic

Even at Lon's great rates, an elephant/leopard safari is still going to be an expensive proposition. Don't you wonder where a cull of a client like that gets his money? Point being not all trash in this world are inbred hillbilly poachers living in trailer parks. By the way, I know some very fine people who live in trailer houses (my brother tops that list). But one would think anyone with the funds to hunt elephants and leopard on the same safari should have been imbibed with some personal success in life. In the case of Lon's client who pimped his teen daughter and chased porn in camp and elephant turds in the middle of the night ... well, let's just say he shatters the "classy white hunter" stereotype. :D He obviously doesn't have enough sense to be successful in the business world. But he has the money. Hmmm.

Hang a classy price tag on a safari and the expectation should be clients who can pay will be classy people. I imagine most of the time they are. But as Lon has pointed out in this story, wealth is no indication of good (or decent) character. I think the previous poster's suggestion for three volumes or chapters in a PH/lodge operator's memoirs - good, bad, and ugly - would be extremely useful. And doubtless it would sell well.

Would a 450/400 be better than a 375 Ruger with a 300 or a 350 gr bullet?

I hunted elephant with Luke Samaris in 2005. It was my fourth safari and I tell you he is a fine gentleman the best. I got the opportunity to meet Patty Curtis, although never hunted with him but enjoyed our conversation around our tent in the Selous. Very sad for a tough guy to leave this world the way he did. Let’s pray the murderers are caught. I hope to see Luke in Nashville.
