One caliber away from contentment... who else?

Again, for me it's all about acquiring the next interesting rifle; rather than the next caliber. Just yesterday I bought a fifth 30-06 simply because it was something interesting that I want to play with for awhile. But a 6.5-something is still the most likely candidate for next caliber.

Get a nice 264 win mag. I nice well behaved middle of the road 6.5. Better than the need more but not as fast as the 6.5-300 Weatherby. The baby bear porridge of the 6.5s just right.

I am dreaming but if I could have....
9.3x74R/6.5×57R Blaser BBF
22 Hornet/20ga/7×57R BD14
7x65R K95

I WOULD BE SORTED. ...

Keep telling yourself that… one day you’ll believe it… :D

You know either new caliber OR a new rifle are both interesting…

:D

I actually used to really want a rifle in that caliber, but recently passed on two separate opportunities to purchase one. Between my 25-06 and 308 Norma Mag, I just don't have the desire for a magnum (or equivalent) in the middleground these days. I think I'd rather have a 6.5x55 or a 6.5 CM in a pretty piece of walnut; but then again, I could always go for a perfect 7x57 to go with the other three. ;-)

With the 25-06 and lovely 308 Norma Mag all you need to top it off is a nice 35.

Agreed; after seeing you and @mdwest extolling the virtues of the 35 Whelen on this forum, I am open to having one. I already have a 375 H&H; but if a 35 Whelen that I can't resist crosses my path, it will probably be going home with me. ;-)

I believe I’m about 98% content now that I have my 7mm-08 to accompany my .308 Win, .30-30 and 7mm RM. The only other temptation for me now is a .358 Win. I have less than zero interest in anything newer than 1970 and the European calibers. Not knocking them in regards to their effectiveness, they just don’t float my boat. If they have Western, PRC, WSM, RUM and so on in their names I don’t have a place for them in my gun case. The ONLY exception might be (look away now all you haters!) a 6.5 CM. And that’s probably just because I can see that it would be a good deer round despite the hate. And no, I’ve never fired one.
I’m also in the camp with the others who are trying to keep the gun numbers down. I’m strictly a hunter, not a shooter. Between the end of November and the beginning of the following October, my hunting rifles rarely come out of the safe. Just my .22LR for gophers and my .223 for coyotes. I’m only allowed one antlered whitetail a year here so the more calibers or rifles I have, the harder it is to choose. At this stage of my life the annual hunts up north for moose, elk and bear are pretty much over so pretty much have to play the draw game to hunt them closer to home. It usually takes 5 years to get drawn for antlered mule deer but when I do get drawn I get to play with two of my guns in a season! I can however hunt them annually with archery gear. Next time I get drawn I might dig out the old muzzleloader….haven’t hunted with it since 2012.
But this year it’s all about getting my first buck (or anything) with my new 7mm-08!

Isn't that the same rifle he was just shooting per his post a couple of days ago? Anyway, congrats Krish!

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]

Out of all the different color variations of Impala the black Impala just stands out with its beautiful pitch black hide.

Impala is one of the animals you will see all over Africa.
You can see them in herds of a 100 plus together.

This excellent ram was taken with one of our previous client this past season.
