Im' no expert either, (a "paper one?), in reality we're really lucky to have the wide range of
quality bullets to choose from, aren't we?

Ding ding ding ding!!!!!

We have a winner folks!

Key word of course being quality.

woodliegh hydro solids in bottlenecks, punch bullets in straight walls if i can get them.

Edward, I'd love to be able to bring you some; be a while before I get over your way... Nice elephant, by the way....

Being in South Africa, I only use Rhino bullets for DG(softs and solids) in 375 H&H, 340 grn solids, 350 grn and 380 grn bonded solid rear core expanders. In 500 Jeff 570 rgn solids and softs. The meplat solids out penetrate anything I have used before. The soft always expand reliably to about 2.5 times original diameter and being of weight forward design they penetrate very well. They have been so satisfactory for me that even on buffalo follow up I use only the softs. I have stopped buffalo charging as well as departing very successfully and with with this bullet in my 500 Jeff.

Norma has the PH range loaded with heavy for caliber Woodleigh bullets which with the reduced velocity will perform very well. I would however not use the conventional round nose jacketed solid, rather look at the new hydro solid.

Throphy bonded make excellent solids and expanders.

Not a good idea to use solids on cat's no matter their design.

You have to go far to beat the Peregrine Bullets!

Just wondering why nosler partitions weren't on the voting ballot:E Confused:

They can certainly be voted for as ”other."

  1. I tried to list top DG brands as best I could and still stay at a reasonable number of manufacturers - I didnt list out CEB or Rhino either, and I'm sure there are others
  2. Generally speaking, the Partition is no longer thought of as a premium DG bullet
If they are your vote please vote other and comment that the Partition would be your choice.

I voted for Swift but would rather use the nosler partition over some other choices.

I may have misread or misunderstood the question; I read its intent as applying to the big 5; Elephant, Cape Buff, Hippo, Lion, Leopard; even crocodile. Are we not particularly looking at a specific projectile, but a manufacturer?
All the major, and custom bulletmakers have a range of bullets available, be it softs, solids, monolithics. I'll reiterate that we're hunting Dangerous Game, where the s^*t can hit the fan, and damn quickly. We really ARE fortunate to have such a wide choice available. Whatever we choose, may it be effective, right NOW.

Manufacturer, not just a bullet.

Totally agree we are very fortunate to have many good options.

Part of my intention with this thread is that when a new guy asks "what bullet should I use?" to send him here. I want people to be able to see what the community thinks, as opposed to the marketing machine, or just a few of us arguing.

To me, it supports the answer of "whatever premium bullet shoots best from your rifle." And perhaps gives people a better idea of what the community truly thinks a premium bullet is.

Royal27; I'm right with you! As a follow-on, I'm starting to muck around with a (borrowed) 416 Ruger case, into which I'll stuff a 500 solid, or monolithic projectile. Ballistics should match the 458Lott.
Seeing I have a magnum Zastava action floating around somewhere, put a 20-22" barrel on it and a made-to-measure stock. Open sights, a dot, or low-powered scope. A double is way beyond my budget, and I have some (most) of the components, so it just might happen.
Why not the Lott, or Win mag? Just a thing of mine about belted cases, belts are one of the biggest cons ever perpetuated on the shooting fraternity.... Come on, shoot me down in flames...

Well that should be interesting!

You need to start a thread for sure once you get going.

Gee, thanks, Royal27. I'm trying to finish the other "projects" that are presently underway. Might have to talk to my favorite master gunsmith, Rob Blomfield, of sunshinecoastgunsmithing.com. Well worth checking out; dunno why he bothers with me....

:Banghead:What, no one has actually voted for Hornady yet? I thought for SURE at least one member would vote for them......:A Stirring:

K-Man, nothing at all to prevent their use; they have great combinations of softs/solids in most if not all calibers; go for them!!!

Someone needs to tell them to stick with what they do best, varmint bullets. They're target and hunting bullets are sufficient but not the best. :A Stirring:
One other thing, remember a few years back when they discontinued bullets because of poor sales and/or profit?
I suspect their DG bullets will go the same way leaving reloaders to develop new loads.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
