Older Legs ... A Cape Buff Hunt With Lower Physical Requirements?

Outstanding old Buff! Looks & sounds like a tough old bruiser.

Did you do a hunt write-up here? If so, please share a link.
Here it is....the first 2 pages were me giving updates...the 3rd page has the details of the stalks. I took 3 amazing animals...all old AF with teeth worn to the gums.

Oops! My mistake. Only four bulls after 80, one bull taken a month before my 80 birthday. Just turned 84.

If you stay with the Limpopo region in SA you will have a better time with less walking . I just returned from Thabazimbi area with Cruiser Safaris. Took a nice buffalo & my sons (10 & 14) took some plains game. The PHs stayed with my sons pace as he’s 10. I’m sure they’d do the same for you. Go have fun !! Post pictures.

We will cut you some slack on that... :)

Welcome to AH and thanks for your post. I will be happy to assist. I would assume while you might not want to hit MOZ or Zim or Zambia that you would still be looking for a true Buffalo hunting experience.
Feel free to give me a shout out area in SA is 90,000 acres and a full big 5 dangerous 7 block, thereby providing you with an honest and truly African experience even though you are hunting in SA.
Having recently signed this block it is worth a mention that this previously was a photographic area and that the game has never been hunted.

feel free to give me a shout, I believe that this will be a perfect fit.

My very best always

Hey everyone, I am starting to plan my 1st Cape Buffalo hunt. I am in my early 60's and have a health issue that has lead to leg issues. Essentially I have neuropathy which has impacted my level of stamina. I can walk and work outside during the day, I just need to take breaks. To some extent, the more I move the better they feel, but will need recovery time.

As much as I really want a true cape buffalo hunt in the open wilds chasing down a Dagga boy over many miles of stalking, I have to be realistic that I am not going to be running up & down hills all day as I no longer have 30-40 year old legs.

I am looking at the South Africa, Namibia, area (open to other thoughts on the southern 1/3 of Africa) for target hunting areas. Would like to find an Outfitter/PH who could handle this type of request. Looking for a good dagga boy buff hunt experience along with options for other plains game. Primary is the buff and flexible on PG.

Any of you other OG's out there that can share training & prep and what to expect would also be appreciated.

Would appreciate any recommendations you guys could make.

Thanks everyone for all the support and great suggestions. Was hesitant to post this topic as we tend to want to avoid accepting changes as we age. I think as we face these challenges staying strong mentally is important. Looking for new adventures to test and push our abilities just as important.

Keep the comments and suggestions coming.

All I can say is that gettin old ain't for sissies ;)

The Save in Zimbabwe is also an option, the hunting parts are dead flat, so spot and stalk is easier. It is also well transected by driveable tracks, so walking distances would be less.

Good suggestion Kevin. The Save is a special place and the Duckworth’s are fine folks.

The greater Kruger in South Africa is what you seek. Animals are wild but but hunted heavily. The areas are set up for photo safaris so the road systems allow you to have shorter stalks.

I agree. I have only taken one buffalo in RSA, the one in my avatar. It was taken on Klaserie, one of the Kruger reserves. As you state, it has an extensive road system to support photo safaris. It would be excellent for a reduced mobility hunt.

Good Day Sir

We would like to invite you to have look at Tsala Hunting safaris. We are based in the Limpopo province of South Africa and the quality of our buff that we take and the quality of our safari's speak for themselves.Their are few friends here on Ah that have hunted with us.

If you have any questions you are most welcome to contact me.

Regards

Rouan

Kevin, this is what my Save looked like.
I seem to have got the more difficult area.
In the middle a Rhino-30m.
I think the big ranches in South Africa are the best for people with a handicap.
But my PH in the Save had an Italian guest who was sitting in a wheelchair, seriously ill with other illnesses.
His greatest wish was a bull elephant.
The bull was tracked; when he stood in the shade at lunchtime; the position was marked with GPS and he went back to fetch the Italian.
He was carried!!!!
And then was able to shoot the bull at 30 paces.
One may think what one like about it.
But as a healthy person one should be careful with judgement towards the sick people.
They have sometimes even stronger dreams than we do.And they are right.
Best regards from Munich

When running is out of the question one tends to shoot better. Good on this old Italian gentleman, he got his dream.

While a "shooting fish in a barrel" type DG hunts in RSA might fit your requirements, if you let your requirements known outfitters and PHs in Zimbabwe, Uganda, Tanzania etc. can accommodate you and I bet you'd be more satisfied. Taking breaks while tracking is not an issue either.

@Nomadx2 I‘m right there with you. Had 4th back surgery this past April, first 2 were pretty well botched in 2011 and resulted in some pretty significant nerve damage. 3rd and 4th were by great surgeons but ended up with fusions. I’m looking at my Buffalo and Sable hunt in 2025 as my retirement party at the ripe age of 66. Please let us know how your hunt goes!

I am not looking for a "shooting fish in a barrel" hunt. I am looking for the best real hunt experience I can push myself to do; however, just trying to be realistic. Also don't want to present false expectations to the PH as we need to be in alignment on goals. This is my 1st buff hunt and have been researching and studying a lot; however, I will learn much more on my first actual hunt. Just trying to prepare as much as I can.

Hello Nomadx2
We can help you on a nice buffalo hunt.
Very large area - definitely not shooting fish in a barrel.
We have lots of buffalo with plenty of plains game mixed in.
We are located in the eastern part of the Kalahari desert where the sand is not so loose as in the west.
We have no sand dunes for example and only the top 4 inches of sand is loose below it is a firm layer so it is not that difficult to walk.
No mountains, no sand dunes just level terrain interspersed with acacia trees and savannah type scrubs and grasses.
Hunting is mostly done by spot and stalk as well as by tracking if we see fresh tracks.
We can take as many breaks as you want while stalking the buffalo.
I wish you well in your search for a buffalo.
Sincerely
Hans de Klerk

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
