Old Scotch Whiskey?

My thoughts on the taste of scotch would be whiskey with dirty socks soaked in it, but hey to each their own, lol!

Totally agree with that assessment when it comes to the lowland stuff. It's like licking an ashtray.

Two of my faves in the not-lowland family are Glen Morangie (highland) 10 yr old, and Glen Moray (Speyside) 10 yr old (I think, been an age since I bought any).

Don't get me wrong - I still prefer Bourbon by a wide margin, but every now and again, I find myself in the mood for something less sweet, and those 2 both fill the bill.

Islay is my favorite, but it is very much an aquired taste.
Not for first timers, but after you have done enough of the Highlands, Speyside, Campbelltown and Lowlands...
Caol Isla, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Klichoman and Ardbeg are at the top of my Islay list.

Unfortunately, Mrs Beemaa doesn't like even the smell of an open glass of one of these.
Drinks by the fire it is!!

Never had Lagavulin, but it is Ron Swanson's favorite. Might have to give it a go.

Caol Isla is probably my absolute favorite or maybe a tie with Lagavulin.
Peaty, smokey and wicked smooooooth.
Reasonably priced as well, but once again not for first timers.
Lagavulin has a little bit of a medicinal taste that turn most people off, I enjoy it.

True story - my Grandfather gave me my first sip of Scotch when I was 5 because he thought I'd hate it.
He then had to fight me for the glass.
Told that story every year at Thanksgiving, makes me laugh.
Been hooked ever since.

Even Scotsmen aren't as stiff-necked as we Texans are. And there are more of us, and especially more of us with combat experience. The spirit of William Wallace is in Texas now, anyway.

@sgt_zim I'm with you on the Bourbon, and Rye come to think of it.
Also have a soft spot for the finer Dark Rums along with Reposado and Anejo Tequilias.
The complexity contained in the dark liquors is amazing to me.

I'm starting to read my own messages and realize I may need a 12-step.

I can discipline myself with GB. Gonna get a pair of 280s (a lefty and righty, one for me, one for my daughter) next year. But my buds and I...are convinced that next November is going to bring some unpleasantness. We do a once-a-month shoot in Columbus, Texas. Starting in January, it's going to be all about 5.56 and 9mm, as much as that galls me. Much prefer shooting my hunting guns.

I will give you my opinion for what its worth . . . nothing. The highest rated Whisky/Whiskey by Whisky Advocate (98) is a blended Scotch - Johnny Walker Blue Label. Next the Haig. It's blended Scotch, that was very popular is the late 70's. Big argument as which one was better Pinch or Chivas Regal, my 92 year old father would be happy drinking the Haig. The Balvenie is the best of the lot. From the look of the bottle, made when bottle shapes were a major part of the marketing. The Glenfiddich, the container is worth about $25 on eBay.

I wouldn't sell them full online unless you wanted to take the chance of spending the weekend in jail. Barring state/local laws, you can probably trade alcohol as that is quite popular among enthusiasts in different distribution areas. Just don't trade it for money unless it's the empty bottle

To my taste buds, corn Bourbon is by far an inferior product to scotch. Like Budweiser, Miller, Coors, etc the use of inferior ingredients gives that alcohol a very sweet but plain taste. Scotch is made of high quality barley, though the taste will vary greatly by region.
Even the American whiskey is starting to get more and more rye and wheat added to it to boost the complexity.

Imo, no $50-100 bottle of bourbon can beat a bottle of highland scotch of the same price point.

The peaty scotch is just terrible though
