Good day AH community!

As we now have the time to reflect on a truly incredible 2023 Buffalo hunting season we find ourselves already itching to get back out there and look for the Dugga boys that got away! We had a truly phenomenal season, hunting 24 buffalo in total (22x bulls and 2x cows) across our various concessions. Two specific highlights were the hunting of a very close to scrumcap bull as well as a 51 & 1/4" bull that we had no idea was even on our concession!! That's the beauty of having enough space to hide! Not once during the season did we see a lapse in age or quality of the Buffalo we hunted. Years of hard work are starting to pay off!

We also like to make it clear that when a hunter books a Buffalo hunt with us we have no size restrictions/limits. Our focus will always be on age. It is the hunters luck on the day that determines the bull he is destined to meet with. That being said the biggest bulls we hunted this season measured 44", 45", 45.5", 46", 46", 48.5", 51 & 1/4" respectively.

Those of you who have hunted Cape Buffalo will know exactly why it is such an addictive hunt and a hunt that deserves all the respect and prestige afforded to it! If you could bottle the feeling of your first buffalo hunt and sell it you'd most definitely be a wealthy man!

Buffalo are truly a noble adversary and it is for this reason that we at Bayly Sippel Hunting Safaris choose to conduct our hunts to the highest standard. Hard hunting on foot by taking the freshest tracks from the day before. The days are very long, consisting mainly of following tracks at a painstakingly slow pace, sweeping roads & checking waterholes. The hunting is fair chase and we will target old bulls as a preference. We have 3 primary locations (separate to our reserve hunt) that we do our buffalo hunts on. The physical demands of the concessions vary. Some may require a hunter to have extremely high levels of fitness as well as a good back whilst other hunts may be a bit more forgiving for someone who may require easier walking. Depending on a hunters physical abilities we will chose the most appropriate of the hunting areas. The bush varies from very thick thorn bush to semi-open savannah. We hunt large self sustaining herds however the older bulls tend to walk alone or in small Dugga boy groups.

If you can successfully hunt one of our buffalo you will have bragging rights at having successfully done one of the hardest buffalo hunts in South Africa! Our concessions are all different and offer something unique to the client but one thing they all have in common is quality old Dugga boys. Whether its a scrumcap bull or a 48 inch monster a few hunters are going to get very lucky next year!

This is a great hunt. Each day you rise before the sun and drive the roads and check water holes for tracks. Once you find a suitable track it invariably leads into the thick stuff. You might be on it for 5 minutes or 5 hours with the suspense building the whole time. I had 6 days of hard hunting with multiple blown stalks and close encounters. When it came together there was a 51 inch monster at the end of the tracks. Experience of a lifetime.

What are the individual size of hunting areas A & B? Also, how is the $10,500 cost for the 1/1 hunt broken down between day rates and trophy fee?

I hunted with Dempsey, Michael and their team in 2022 for plains game. I had a fantastic time, and they made sure I had an authentic African experience. I learned so much from the team, (tracking specifically)
I am really hoping to return to them in 2025 for a Buffalo of my own.

I can recommend these guys. I contacted and laid out what I was looking for in a buffalo hunt with an added kudu. Communication was fast and answered all my questions and I have booked a hunt for early 2024. Read the hunt reports here, these guys do it right. Hunt report to follow after my hunt. Mac

Good day @Labman ,

The three primary areas we hunt our Buffalo separate to the reserve are as follows in terms of size - 12,000, 3,000 acres and 6000 acres.

If you are unsuccessful on the hunt you will only be charged $385 per day for the hunt. Trophy fee's will of course not be payable unless someone unfortunately wounds a buff. Savings on our buffalo packages are very high as typically this hunt - if working directly off our 2023 price list - would set you back $11,695 thus saving you $1195 by booking the package.

I hope that has answered your question!

Kind regards,
Dempsey Bayly & Michael Sippel

I hunted with Michael in June 2023 and took this dagga boy. It is exactly what I hoped for.

When is the best time of year to hunt Buffalo?
Good day @lockingblock,

Depending on which of our area's we go to they all have their better times. Some are better in Feb/March and others are better June through to October. It all depends on the buffalo's habits in each area as they differ greatly from concession to concession.

Kind regards,
Dempsey Bayly & Michael Sippel

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.
