Oberndorf Goodness… What to do, What to do

I would suggest 9.3x62 over the 7x57. One reason you live in Canada that caliber makes for a fantastic bush gun. The dies, bullets, cases, and loaded ammo is not that much more difficult to get than 7x57. The 9.3 is great for anything in North America where the 7 Mauser is not idea for the heavy stuff. Just a thought.

If you want to shoot heavies 8 x 57. If you want a more lithe planes game type gun 6.5x57. Might even hold out for a vintage gun that has an octagon to round barrel and buy it just for the barrel. Those barrels now cost at least $2000 to have made.

And if you want to go even heavier, and really get esoteric, there is the 9.3 X 57. There were a very few original Oberndorf Mauser spotters made in this caliber, so it would not be unauthentic. And also, regardless of what many will tell you, it is not that difficult to load for this caliber. If you are not a handloader, though, this is not the route for you.

To confirm what has already been mentioned by others, it is an intermediate length action and I’m not modifying the mag box or bottom metal to stuff something in that wouldn’t fit normally.
Remember how I said I would have to wait for awhile to move this project forward in the short term cause I was tapped out from my Africa hunt?! Well, I squeezed blood from a stone and asked the gunsmith to spin a new barrel on… and I get it in two weeks! Caliber to be revealed soon!

@BC Tal

100%

It is begging to be mated with a slender, precision made 7x57 chambered barrel and a beautifully figured walnut stock…

Something like above sounds nice. But your funding it not me.

I reckon you want something nice and it will be.

I would, most humbly, suggest a 275 rigby, as everyone knows that you shoot a better class of animal with a rigby……

Gumpy
I kinda like the idea of this too.

The main thing is that it looks like a Classic rifle.

It’s all about the safari photo. I would like to hunt plains game with a beautiful rifle.

I would like to add dangerous game to my allowable budget.

And for my 100th post…
I couldn’t wait, @Just a dude in BC picked it up for me and I will have it soon.
The Oberndorf action now wears a Heym barrel in 7x57. It honestly couldn’t be any other caliber.
This project will not be an attempt to rebuild the Oberndorf as it was; a collector, but rather as a custom; i want to be free to build the rifle the way I want and within my price range. That said, i really love and respect that action.

Hi BC,

Great!!! One of the best cold hammered barrel maker, by the way. And the action is already set up for the 7 mm Mauser at the factory. Couldn´t be better as I see. Congratulations!!

You should make it into 300 WSM. Let's take a vote ... uh ... okay, I'll show myself out. :D

Have fun with that build. Do your own checkering?

Can't wait to see the finished product!

I am busy reading up on Mauser actions and specifically the "intermediate" actions.
A sacrileges / heretical idea I have about a "short action" DG rifle for thick brush - a BIG brother to the 358 Winchester
I have a set of dimensions that were kindly added to a post / thread of mine from yesterday - in the Gunsmithing section.

Do the dimensions in my post relate accurately to the action you have ?
Checking those would be greatly appreciated.

It’s not easy being a left-handed shooter on this forum.

No, it certainly is not. But for me, i find being left handed doesn’t mean i only want left handed rifles. For example, I’m smitten with these commercial Mauser Oberndorfs. Any modern lefty rifle in the same caliber is more practical but, there is something about those Oberndorfs.

The rifle is with my gunsmith so i cannot measure it specifically, but I have no reason to doubt those printed measurements for a commercial Oberndorf intermediate length action including the magazine length being 3.115.

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
