Not addicted to hunting buffalo?

Well I guess I’m one of the only people that is addicted to hunting Buffalo. I always find a way to add Buffalo on my safaris and will continue to do so.

You just can't help it...

I'd echo some of the previous comments. I'm not necessarily addicted to buffalo, but I find classic tracking in truly wild areas of Africa to be the most enjoyable form of hunting.

In many cases, buffalo is the primary quarry to allocate a 10-12 day block to this style of hunting. I certainly won't turn down an opportunity to hunt buffalo, but haven't found them to be overly challenging (perhaps I've been exceptionally lucky). It is true that I haven't killed many, but shoot them in the vitals and they die. Practice quick target acquisition off sticks, and you'll get a bullet into them at the end of the track.

However, I recognize I don't fit into the man vs. beast contingent of African hunters. I'm chasing the immersive experience and appreciate banter with the trackers, climbing inselbergs, or identifying new bird species as much as running my hands on smooth bosses.

Hunted Buff and Tuskless in August ... it's a toss up with Tuskless perhaps gettting the nod ... What makes Buffalo addicting?.. 3 - 4 hours on a track, a little drama along the way, Iron Sights and taking the shot inside of 50 yards

I'm not addicted to buffalo either, they just don't trip my trigger like wart hog, nyala, zebra, the list goes on and on lol. Buffalo are towards the end of my list, elephant is way higher

As @WAB correctly alluded to, hunting Coues deer is potentially as addictive as any big game. Hunting this little deer, mano a mano, in very steep, rocky country with patches of scrub oak and piñon-juniper woodland, various cacti and yucca spp (that want to impale your legs) along with absolutely impenetrable zones of manzanita is impossible to adequately describe. :)

I am also not addicted to Buffalo. I like variety. I want to hunt a variety of animals. I believe that I could get addicted to night hunting predators. I got more excited at bushpig than Cape Buffalo.

Going on night hunt in August 2023.

I am addicted!

I've only taken one, at this point.

Even though I may never hunt another, I'd love the opportunity to get one with my double at close range. Even try to stop a charge, if it came to that.

I can’t speak to Buffalo yet, although it’s next on my list. But hunting Africa is sure a powerful addiction regardless of which critter is in the crosshairs. Otherwise we’d just raise more of them here. ;)

Honestly, if given a choice between an elephant at close range and a buffalo, I'd probably go with the elephant for the next trip to Africa.

But, I could see hunting buffalo until I were physically unable to hunt them without undo assistance.

I totally agree. I’ll write a hunt report soon but here’s a teaser.

You should try tuskless elephant hunting....if that does not do it it for you maybe consider fly fishing......
I unsuccessfully hunted a PAC buffalo in Namibia this summer and it has me wanting an elephant bad. I’ve hunted 1 buffalo and am addicted but I’d take an elephant hunt over buffalo. I do want another buffalo with my double and might try for a cow or something on next years trip.

I’ve been thinking about this since the discussion on scrum cap/broken horn bulls. All I ever read is how you will become addicted to hunting buffalo after your first hunt. I’ve been on two successful buffalo hunts both in free range areas and took great buffalo each time, but I’m not addicted to hunting them. The second hunt was to accomplish some aspects I feel I didn’t get on the first hunt and it did that. I’ll probably hunt more buffalo in future, but more because buffalo and wild areas often go together rather than to specifically hunt a buffalo. In Africa, eland, bushbuck, and warthogs get me really excited. I enjoy buffalo hunting, but not above other hunts. Anyone else not addicted to hunting buffalo after their first buffalo?
I’m right there with you, brother. I love big horns, big antlers, big bears, big elephant and cats much more. I’ve killed three buffalo and will kill a couple more in Tanzania next year but it doesn’t seem to excite me like it does a lot of guys on AH. If wounded, I know they can be very dangerous but I’ve never wounded one. A lion or a brown bear can charge you, just like a buffalo, but they also have teeth and bite! I get much more worked up stalking them than buffalo.

My only trip to Africa was for Plains game in the Eastern Cape and was incredible. However I felt I missed out on a couple of things: Hunting by watching trackers work their magic, and seeing, hearing elephant, lions, Buffalo, hippos in the wild. I wouldn't necessarily need to hunt them, just being in the bush with them while I hunted more affordable game with trackers would be great. Is that an option, or must one hunt Buffalo and other DG for that to happen?

For me it is about the hunt and the experience, any hunt that requires you to put in the effort and time to track or spot and stalk. True tracking hunts to get in close are on the top of my list. Buffalo and elephant. Those hunts that require patience and planning IE leopard, croc, honet badger, and hippo come second The long spot and stalk for any of the plains game from blue diker to giraffe come next. Not to forget that night hunts. I would hunt buffalo every trip if I could afford it. 2024 will be the next set of buffalo for my better half and myself.

To answer the North America part of hunts, bear are at the top of the list. I also find the Coues deer and old mule deer buck to be very challenging. I see the coues all the time when I am hiking our mountain but a old large coues is one of the toughest to be successful on of all the deer I have encountered.

Short answer is yes you can, but the pricing still won’t compare to a ranch plains game hunt. I’ll send you a PM.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
NRA benefactor, areas hunted, add congo, Mozambique3, Zambia2
Out of all the different color variations of Impala the black Impala just stands out with its beautiful pitch black hide.

Impala is one of the animals you will see all over Africa.
You can see them in herds of a 100 plus together.

This excellent ram was taken with one of our previous client this past season.
