Finally booked a return to New Zealand. Hunting with LOCHINVAR SAFARIS. https://www.lochinvarsafaris.co.nz/
They were at the Sacramento ISE show this season and I was there booking a 5 Day Alberta Duck and Goose hunt. My good friend and hunting partner Steve made the introduction and I’m pleased with the package I negotiated.
Hunting:
500” Stag
Tahr
Chamois
Arapawa Ram
Fallow Buck
Feral Goat - if they have a good one worth shooting.
Cull hunt if opportunity presents.
Maybe a day or two of fishing…
Leave May 9th and return May 21st this year.
Flying out of SFO. Flying Air New Zealand direct out of SFO - Auckland - Christchurch.
Booked my own flights using AMEX points. Booked economy, put in a bid for an upgrade to business class.
Using their rifles. They have nice rifles and scopes. Long range shooters if need be. It was too close to try to bring my own rifle per the outfitter. I’m told New Zealand can be difficult to get your rifles in to hunt with and it takes a while to get permits and clearance. I wasn’t planning on going to NZ this year, but I really wanted to. So I committed.
Breaking in new Zamberlan 700 Sierra GTX boots. Picked up new Carbon fiber walking sticks. Since I’ve lost weight and got in better shape over the last 3 years, I’ve bought new hunting clothes too. Mostly KUIU. I have new waterproof rain jackets and pants. Layer system too. I should be in good in the gear department. I’ve had a nice Eberlestock scabbard pack with hydration that I’ll bring.
I’ve been walking about 5-6 miles a day. Lost 20lbs in the last 6 months. Going to increase to 8-10 miles this week to include some hills. Need to get down another 10lbs to 210.
Had 3 other friends hunt Lochnivar. They had a good time and trophy quality was as promised. Lodge was as described.
I’ll practice shooting a little with my 300 RUM a few weeks out, then when I get there I’ll practice with their rifles to get it sorted.
I’ve been thinking about this trip for a while. I won’t rule out another Africa hunt at the end of this year. I retire at the end of the year and plan to do an extended stay and hunt more of Africa.
I’d like to book a Spain hunt for 2026 too.
I’ll post updates of anything of value or once I’m wheels up…
