Hi everyone, I am new, and I mean brand new. I'd like to go hunting in Africa and someday shoot something with horns. If I can't do that, I want to shoot something that at least has 3 ears. I ain't rich but I ain't dead either. I would love suggestions on gear, hunts, animals, regions, gun deals (I have a 375 and 458 for Africa, and a few 300 win mags for urban environments but need more), and always like to make new like minded friends. I'd love to go hog hunting in Texas if I can't shoot things in Africa. Thanks everyone! -The Rook

:S Welcome:

First, welcome to AH! Second, you're in the right place! I ain't a rich man either, but was able to make my dream of hunting Africa come true. For some of us, it just takes us a little longer to get there and that is ok! In the meantime, as you dream and plan, there is a wealth of information from people who have hunted Africa and they happily share their experiences. For a gear list, I compiled what I took in my post "The Long Road to Africa." I am by no means an expert. Just about all the gear I took was from suggestions from people who have been to Africa more times than I have been to the grocery store. Philip Glass is a member here and has some great YouTube videos on what he likes to use. It's a personal choice, but that should help you get started. Finally, enjoy the journey. It's one hell of a great ride.

Welcome....This is by far the best source I've found on hunting Africa and everything to do with medium-large & large bore rifles...enjoy!

Hi, and welcome!

Whether you want to hunt in Africa or anywhere else, the first thing you want to do is decide which animals you most want to take. If you want to try Africa, do you want to take dangerous game? Buffalo, leopard, elephant? If plains game, which animals interest you the most? Without dangerous game, a plains game only hunt can be less expensive than a guided hunt in NA. Whichever you choose you have rifles in good calibers. I took a .300 WM and .458 WM on my last safari for buffalo and plains game. Nothing took more than one shot. In NA I've taken mule deer, black bear and moose with the same .300.

If you haven't done much hunting before, you'll find plenty of people willing to help here.

Best of luck,

Doug

Welcome to AH. You don’t have to be rich to go to Africa. I’m sure not and I’ve been twice and hopefully will make a couple more trips. It just takes planning and a little sacrifice.
As far as gear, if you already hunt you probably have most of what you need. There are several threads on here that indicate what you need. @ Phillip Glass has several YouTube videos that cover a lot.
Good luck in making your dream come to fruition.

Welcome. Sell all those rifles but something like an 06 and you dill have close to a South Africa plains game hunt and have all the firepower you need. Good luck and stay here

Good day! Welcome to AH!

G’day from Australia.

Tell us more about your experience. Could you describe Upland game? I’m not familiar with the term.

This place is a slippery slope. It took me 10 months from joining to having feet on the ground in South Africa.

G’day! Upland game is what we call the birds and small mammals that aren’t waterfowl or big game. Pheasants, doves, rabbits, and that sort. I have the most experience with shotgun hunting and probably harvested around 200 pheasants if you count pen raised birds.

@TheRookie where you from? There’s plenty of big game hunting in the US if you know where to look. If you’re ready to go to Africa this is the place to start planning. I’m not rich and I went last year. Just work out what you want to hunt and start budgeting monthly into a separate account. Questions? Just start using the search tool and asking everyone here!

Welcome to the forum.
Guns you already have.

Next step:
Start looking for offers for plains game in South Africa and Namibia.
Generally speaking, cull hunt or management hunts are most economic.
But some trophy plains game hunts are also very attractive.
300 is for all plains game you can imagine
375 is universal for plains game and dangerous game as well, if you want to add buffalo or buffalo cow on the list.

Below is example. Such offers are not uncommon. Find something of your interest, book the hunt, and go. As simple as that.
In the meantime, socialise on the forum and ask question for anything of your interest.
Average timing for forum members, is from date of joining, within a year you will be hunting in Africa. ;)
