I recently had this rifle delivered. Ruger No.1 with Jard trigger, Brux 25" barrel, metal by John Mclaughlin and Pete Mazur, stock by Gary Goudy. Loading 25-'06 with RL22 and AB110s. I will be shooting it later this week.

This will be my Coues deer rifle and I'll probably use it on antelope in NM next year.

That caliber makes a fantastic coues deer rifle.

I shot my coues at 420 yards with one using Barnes 100 gr TTSX bullets and it left a real nice exit hole.

That’s beautiful

Nice!

Also perfect for the pygmy antelope slam, all gazelle and on up to say Lechwe, Nyala...a great any deer round, but it appears to be a fair weather gun for sure!

Beautiful rifle, congrats! :E Drooling::E Drooling::E Drooling::E Drooling:

Well, I live in SE Arizona. Hunting season is almost always clear weather and if not, I have other rifles. Besides, I can't help myself - I love steel and walnut guns.

Is that a new stock, or the original stock was worked on? I'm a huge fan of no.1s. :) Oh, and how about more pictures. We all like gun porn. ;)

That is a Turkish walnut blank I've had for a few years. It was made into this stock my my old friend and master stock maker, Gary Goudy. Neider buttplate, Fisher grip cap, and lots of nice details. Design and checkering are 'English' style. Weight with scope is 7lbs., 15 oz.

We found that the Schmidt and Bender 2-10X Summit had too little eye relief to be fitted to this rifle. So it wears a 3.5-10 VX3HD scope, which should work well with this caliber. This is a common problem with Ruger No. 1 rifles - the eyebox needs to extend back to the safety and many scopes are too short in the barrel to accommodate the ring placement.

I'll try to get a few more photos and post up here.

me too. lol i 1/2-jokingly refer to the nice ones as TX or Africa guns! (SW more like it but maybe just W with the weather they've been experiencing for years now!) They make appearances at home on sunny winter days! 257 AI & 757 AI love 'em! l. pic i recall vividly-late season meat hunt/doe culling...shot 2 in the span of 15 sec (in diff fields as I was in a hedgerow between.) great fun and meat for all! The weather typically straightens out up here by the time most hunters return home and it typically does not start snowing until dark when you're gutting an animal...i may just start bubble-wrapping stands and saplings along trails!

@Nevada Mike.
Love the rifle and couldn't have chosen a better caliber.
Instead of the accubond have you thought about the 100gn TTSX. In that barrel you should be able to get it up to close on 3,500fps. You can get it over 3,400fps in a 24 inch tube with no worries.
Another good projectile would be the 110gn ELDX for that reach out and smack them a bit further.
A bullet I have had great success with in my own fast 25 is the 117grain SST. In the 25-06 you should be able to get a tad over 3,000fps. This is an exceptional bullet for deer and I have never recovered one from my 25 but did recover one from my son's 308. Text book performance on game.
All you have to remember is the 25-06 shoots flatter than you think and early on you may have a tendency to give to much hold over at longer range.
If you want to have a lot of fun in the off season load up some nosler 85gn balistic tip or 100gn speer SPBT and hunt some coyotes, just don't expect to keep skins. These two projectiles almost cut foxes in 2 a looong way out.

Goudy‘s work is truly exceptional. You have a real treasure.

Oh the money we spend to hunt those little deer!

I agree that the 100 gr pills will absolutely do the job on Coues. My 257 AI shoots 100 gr 3,450 fps and 115 gr 3,250 fps (it's picky) and the 100 gr deer go straight down as their dinner is interrupted, while the 115s kill em no problem after running 30 yds. I'm certain it's a combo of the lower SD bullet setting up quicker (doing more damage) and the high velocity imparting more E and damage. I like Nos PTs for terminal performance under 400-450 yds. TTSXs are more than fine, too, and will perform beyond 450. Also less wind drift w/ the 100s because the V is so much higher in my particular gun/load. The TTSX will also penetrate better downrange. With coues, whatever's most accurate in your gun is the way to go...My experience with accubonds is they tend to favor high velocity for proper expansion. And, I'm talking 200+ lb deer. The 100s do the job in .25. Used to use 115-117s in a Wby for the same effect (plus bbl wear!)

Very nice rifle sir!

Red Leg - Thanks you kindly for your gracious comment. Gary is one of my oldest friends, we have hunted the US and Canada together and he has stocked a number of rifles and shotguns for me. He is extremely talented and a very avid hunter. Unfortunately, this is the last stock he built. His eyesight is going and he refuses to do work that, according to him is "substandard". I hope to host him here for a quail hunt this winter.

True. My only consolation is that I can hunt by driving out from my house to nearby areas. I have Coues deer on my property, but I do not harass them here. I have grown to like and respect their elusive behavior.

Long shots are the rule for Coues, as you know. I was using my 7mm RM, but felt it was overkill in power and the rifle weighs nearly nine pounds. This will be better, I think.
