As I’ve gotten older I’ve tended to shoot fewer and fewer of my rifles, and have gotten to the point where I only hunt with my Model 70’s. I’ve got a pre-64 in .264 win mag, a post-64 .338 win mag and a pre-64 .416 Hoffman. All 3 are as close to identical in setup as I can make them. All have Brown Precision fiberglass stocks, all triggers are set at 2 3/4 pounds pull and each is topped with a Leupold VX-5 HD scope. Each has been rebarreled with stainless match barrels after shooting out the factory barrels; the .264 has a Krieger, the .338 a Lilja and the .416 a Shilen barrel. I’ve also got a great shooting pre-64 featherweight .30-06 that I seldom shoot, only because I haven’t yet put a Brown Precision stock on it. All my other rifles just sit in my gun room as I never hunt with any of them these days.
When I go to Africa, I typically take 2 rifles, almost always my .338 and .416. Lately, I’ve been itching to add 2 more rifles, a .270 and .375 H&H and I’ll be set for good. I’ve found a pre-64 barreled action in .270, so that project will come soon enough. That leaves a .375…
I almost bought the pre-64 express action that Angelo-Orygun has had for sale here, but the bolt face had been opened up for a .404 Jeffrey and my rifle builder though it was a bit too big for .375 H&H, so the search continued. Until last week. He found a complete rifle based on a pre-64 express action, with Timney trigger and Hi-Tec fiberglass stock. The only unwanted part is the 7mm STW barrel, which I’ll end up selling. The guy who sold me the rifle is a benchrest shooter and excellent rifle builder. He’s getting older and decided to start selling some of his guns, so he offered me the complete rifle for $1,500! Of course I bought it. We’ve ordered a 24” Shilen select match stainless barrel and I’ll be topping it with a VX-5 HD in 2-10, which I think will be an ideal scope for a .375.
Stay tuned…
