New Member - Won Auction for Van Wijk Safaris

I just looked at their trophy fees. I don't know what's included in the hunt you bought but anything else will be on the expensive side. Trophy fees are definitely high. Figure out what you want to shoot and compare the total cost with some of the offers on this forum. You may find that the auction bargain isn't much of a bargain.

I was waffling on saying anything but @Labman pushed me to do so, with his response. And in fairness I haven't looked at their trophy fees. But - just for example (and others make offers too) the place I hunted (@GAME 4 AFRICA SAFARIS) gave me a very nice 5 species package for 7 hunting days for around 4K for everything. The lodge is fabulous, the Coetzee family terrific, and the properties large enough to satisfy me. Also, the number of hunters in camp is very small - typically just two groups. One brother guides one group, the other brother guides the other group. I don't know how something like that compares to what you are looking at, but thought I'd toss it out for comparison. Best of wishes in whatever you decide sir.

I have checked the prices, and indeed they are a bit higher, when compared to average offers on this forum.

Welcome aboard Nathan. Found this: Their trophy prices are on the high side. Take note on the price list, an $800 pick up and drop off charge for donated hunts.

EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLAR transfer fee from the airport for an auction hunt! There is often an angle somewhere on donation hunts where the outfitter can make himself whole - but an EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLAR cab ride!?!

I should add that I have done two auction hunts. The first was to BC for bear and I have returned four times. Great experience and no surprises. The second was just a couple of years ago, and I happened to be sitting with the outfitter the evening of the auction. I had ample time to dialogue with him and we had agreed on a plan before I bid. It too was a great hunt and experience.

I too have had two auction hunts and both turned out well. I got them somewhat by accident and at such low cost, if I had detected any shenanigans in vetting the outfitters I would simply have walked away.

I would not pay an $800 taxi fee. I would simply rent a car. However, I have done a lot of driving in Africa and even had my own motorbike in Togo for a number of years. It may piss them off, but you could arrange safe transport for a fraction of that cost.

Nuts....see you at the ranch......part of the problem of auction hunts.....the bargain often stops as soon as the hammer drops......

No airport pickup would finish it for me.

Remember that trip is for one way, you will need to pay it again when you leave.

Welcome to AH.

As others have said, trophy fees are on the high side but $800 for the pickup and drop off is excessive.

Check out the deals section here and maybe even post what you're looking for. You'll likely get a better deal from a well reviewed sponsor here. Nothing against the auction outfitter. I've don't one auction hunt and went twice as I had a great time. The 800 fee is just souring my opinion...

Well, I have been thinking about doing an African hunt for several years now and just did a spur of the moment auction purchase of a hunt with Van Wijk Safaris. It would be my first trip to Africa and I would be bringing my 15 year old son and my wife.

I've been trying to do some research on Van Wijk and they have a facebook page with good reviews but not finding much else about them. We would just be doing plains game and maybe an add on tour of Kruger National Park at the end of the hunt.

I didn't pay that much for it so if it turns out to be a mistake I can just chalk it up to a donation to conservation since 100% of the proceeds go to the charity.

In the process of checking out flights and dates and making plans. If anyone knows anything about Van Wijk good or bad I would love to know and in the meantime I'll work on logistics. Looking at their pricelist for additional animals (base hunt is only for an impala or blesbuck) they seem a little high but since the price I'm paying for the auction is good I think it should even out pretty well as long as we don't both shoot a kudu and a sable.

Anyway, main reason for posting is to find out if anyone has anything to say about Van Wijk either good or bad. On the search function there is only one post from 2010 from someone trying to resell one of these auction hunts but nothing else.

Thanks, Nathan
What exactly did you buy at this spur of the moment auction purchase?

I didn't know about that airport ride. Wow. Mine was free, or a part of that package I was offered. I will also say there were other financial kindnesses shown to me but will refrain from specifying what. For the record my package (4Kish) got me a kudu, blue wildebeest, blesbok, impala, and zebra. I still believe, combined with the accommodations and the graciousness of the Coetzee family, that it was a tremendous deal. Heck, Wik even bought me lunch on my "taxi ride" to the lodge.

Go on the hunt and enjoy yourselves!

Nathan, I completely understand the excitement of auctions, I have purchased a number of auctioned hunts. My buddy bought an auctioned hunt 3-4 years ago, and once he figured out the upcharges for buying an auctioned hunt, like your 1600.00 pickup and return, plus higher trophy fees, he decided to forgo the 1200.00 he paid for his auction, and he booked an auction with another outfit. I think it is great that you now have a starting point, I would imagine the purchased hunt you have will go wonderfully well. Having been to Africa as many times as I have, it wouldn't hurt to make a short list of animals you really want, then check for deals on this site. And if you see a package you like, but would like to make a change, don't be afraid to ask. Of my last 12 trips to Africa, I have purchased my own airline tickets and since I always overnight at the Afton House, they help me with the rifle permit. Good luck Nathan!!

What exactly did you buy at this spur of the moment auction purchase?
I won an auction for $800 for a 10 day hunt that includes 1 Blesbuck or Impala for each hunter for 2 hunters and 2 observers. To keep from getting clobbered for giving these away they have a special mandatory charge of $300 per person and $400 each way to/from the airport. So for the 3 of us we will have to pay $1,700 to the outfitter the hunt that we won. I think that is understandable so at least they get their costs covered if we stuck to the included animals and don’t add any on. So total cost for a 10 day hunt with transportation to/from the airport for $2,500.

Looking at some of the sponsors prices that hunt would cost around $6,000 - $7,000 if you stuck to just the one animal for each hunter.

If we end up shooting a Gemsbok, Kudu, Sable, Blesbuck, Impala, Warthog Wildebeest, Zebra between the 2 of us total price goes to $16,100. Those animals added to some of the other price lists would still be more. The price stays cheaper unless you start adding a Kudu and Sable for each of us.

The only animal that we might want to double up on is Kudu. Not sure we could add many more animals on a 10 day hunt if we wanted to. I do plan on asking if they give any kind of discount for multiple animals. Doesn’t hurt to ask.

Still looking my options. For now all I’ve done is make a donation to the Utah Wild Sheep Foundation.

Thanks very much for the input so far.

Thanks, Nathan

Might be worth doing the auction hunt while sticking exactly to what you already paid for. Then plan a side trip to another outfitter for another 4-5 days and hunt whatever else you want. (and let them take you back to the airport for free). There are a lot of good deals on this forum, might be worth a look. Hope it goes well either way, just my two cents lol

Nathan, one who's hunted more animals for less money, Hunts are somewhat negotiable and packages can be found for less money and you'd be shooting more animals. Your deal animals will be shot the first or second day and then it'll be sit around and enjoy the atmosphere, go shopping locally or spend $$$$$ on more animals. I'd say write off that $800 on your taxes and start looking for another all in package from one of the outfitters here.

It is $400 each way, $800 total. It is 2 1/2 hours away and they are donating the hunt so it didn’t seem that unreasonable to me. I understand them padding in some $ to cover themselves a bit if I chose to stick with the 1 animal included in the auction.

First of all, welcome to AH! Always good to have new members on the site.

Secondly, I'm not going to say anything about Van Wijk Safaris. As you'll see in my signature I'm a U.S. rep for JKO Safaris, and it just wouldn't be professional of me to criticize another outfitter. It also wouldn't be honest as I know nothing about the outfitter except what I've read here on this thread.

What I will say is you're not the first to bid on a hunt at some sort of event, win it and then research the outfitter you just signed up with. I didn't quite do the same on my very first safari, but close enough. So please do not feel that I'm criticizing you, but rather trying to relate experience so that you do not end up disappointed.

Only after I had wrote the deposit check at a hunting expo and was committed did I take time to research the outfitter. And even after not finding much about him, I still made my way to RSA. Without boring you with an old story, suffice to say I was sitting in the aforementioned Afton House in Johannesburg when a phone call came that let me know I was not to bother making my way the next day to Kimberley for my hunt. To say I wish I had found this website, did my research first and then booked a hunt, is a bit of an understatement. Fortunately, a backup plan was hastily made and I ended up having a great hunt with another outfitter.

It was in fact this experience that motivated me to want to be in the business somehow. Africa had set her teeth in me and I would return. I knew this at about dinner on the first day of my hunt. But I'm not sure I would've returned if it wasn't for the outfitter that bailed me out of my predicament that was partially of my own making.

So i won't tell you to bail on Van Wijk, but I would encourage you to continue researching them and comparing to others. From what I read, you're only $800 into this now, and in reality it's not that much compared to what it could be. It is your decision to make, but you may wish to think about just how many animals you believe you'll actually take, how many days you may want to hunt, etc. and add up all of those costs, and research outfitters here on AH as well as other places. There's so many reputable outfitters here on AH and plenty who are not sponsors but there are reports on. There are so many member hunt reports to give you more confidence in who you may be considering.

That $800 you already spent, you may save that much and more, just by not being charged for the trip to the hunting lodge. And you may get on that plane feeling confident you're heading into a good situation, that as the commercial says is priceless.

Best wishes for whatever you choose to do!
