What is the proper way to vette a new member? New member, no previous posts. Could be a lot of money involved. Possibility of bad publicity for hunting.

I am very uncomfortable, but want to be fair.

Lon

That’s a tough one Lon. I’d say if you’re uncomfortable it lies with the new member to make you feel better about it. YOU are a known good guy and have nothing to prove. They can’t expect 100% trust as a new member. If you experience what you believe are “red flags”, trust your gut and don’t take the risk.

Well said !
It's up to the new member to earn the trust of the active members. I have to talk to you not text. Trust your guts, if it doesn't feel right, walk away.

You can always ask about their hunting experience. I think it totally "normal" for an outfitter to ask about this, particularly depending on the demands of the hunt. "Have you hunted Africa before?" - seems totally fine to me. Then maybe, "If I may ask, which outfitter?", etc... Just my thoughts.

I check references before booking a hunt. Is there a reason it’s unacceptable for an outfitter to ask the same thing? Asking for references of non-zim outfitters or booking agents that can be verified seems reasonable to me. I wouldn’t be offended if I was asked.

When filming takes place for a documentary. It had be edited to present things how ever they want.

Kind of like when 60 minutes show up on your front porch.

Post production is where the magic happens. An unwanted or unexpected narrative can be easily created. Deep dive on any prior documentaries, FB, YT, IG, etc…would a prudent minimum.

Years ago, when I was in college, all engineering majors had to take a class called "Ethics and Professionalism." I remember in that class, we watched a video that a large electric utility company had made. Basically, it was a rebuttal to a 60 Minutes hatchet job CBS had done on them. When the utility company agreed to let 60 Minutes do the show, they said under two conditions: First, the utility company would have their own film crew and wherever the CBS cameras went, the utility company would also be there getting the exact same footage. Second, the utility company got to review the final version and comment on it, at least one week before airing it on TV. The utility was building a nuclear power plant and there were delays and cost overruns. The 60 Minutes reporter would question a worker or exec and thought they were onto something. However, the company would explain in great detail what the 60 Minutes people were misunderstanding and calmly move on. 60 Minutes final version omitted many of the explanations and was very unfair and outright lied in many cases.

If they are up front and you can get some basic details a background search is possible. Determining their history can provide some direction to supporting their story or not.

The amount of risk financially or otherwise needs to be weighed against the facts they are presenting to you. Confirmation and references and any past work can provide some guidance on them.

Let me know if I can help.

I would say the same way you would if they weren’t a member

Anytime I have a deal with a new member either buying or selling anything with significant money involved. I do some online research using name and phone number. My best method is a phone call or several phone calls. I can get much better idea of the person I am dealing with a 5-10 min chat over the phone. Not full proof but its helps.

Two way communication tends to give some insight on character. If it smells funny, I don’t put it on my fork. With IP calling/video chat, there’s almost no reason to be left in the dark if someone needs a little extra vetting.
Facetime, if possible. You can see each other face to face and the eyes will tell the truth.

I'm trying to understand exactly what's going on here. Lon, are you vetting an AH member as a potential client? I didn't know that was a thing. Just figured if the client put down the deposit and could fit the schedule/species offered, then it was a done deal. Interesting.

ask some questions and take some time , it can be either way . Rather safe than sorry .Espen if it is a media group or something.

Okay, if this is about outfitter vetting client, perhaps there should be more to it than the deposit he can send.

This guy might deserve a pass.

Lon, I think you may need someone else to help you sort all this out if someone is proposing filming anything.

Your comment about possible bad publicity has me concerned.

We are obviously missing a lot of details that you probably should not post here. Let me know if I can help.

Ask an attorney if there is a paper to sign or some way to make a seduce and betray production too dear? dunno. If you are feeling very uncomfortable thats enough reason to pause and loop back around. I hope it works and everything is fine.

Hello, My wife and I hunted with Marius 2 years ago. He fit us into his schedule after a different outfitter "bailed" on us. He was always very good with communications and although we didn't end up meeting him personally, he called us multiple times during our hunt to make sure things were going well. We were very happy with him.
