New member from central Illinois

Thanks. I am just North of Champaign. Sounds like there are several from Illinois on here. I was trying to see if anybody happened to be close by to chat more about our trip. It’s quite intimidating the first go around.

Welcome to the group. I spent 30 years hunting and living in IL. Lots of good members down there.

For your first safari with your son, it sounds like a 7mm is the solution: 7x57, 7x64, 7mm mag.

barnes ttsx and swift a-frames will get it all done, up to Eland. It’s what my son used until he switched to a 375HH.

Hello Everyone!
I have been following your adventures, insight, guidance, and helpful hints for a while now. I think the younger generations call this ghosting? My apologies for taking some time to actually join.
I am from central Illinois. Have been an active outdoorsman my entire life. I have three young boys who are all active in the outdoors as well. I am finally taking the leap and am working on a June ‘23 safari through Ed at EAI Outdoors. It will be a 7-8 day hunt for PG. I will be taking my oldest son who will be 13 at the time of our adventure. We are both extremely excited and are soaking up all the knowledge, tips, and advice all of you experts can share. We love watching the videos of your hunts. Thank you all for sharing so much of your adventures.
Hello @ILDRHNTR and welcome to AH. I'm so excited for you and your son to be going to Africa together. It will certainly be an experience you will never forget. I hope that we can take our grandkids someday so we can share the experience with them. And, lucky you, June 2023 is just around the corner. We hope to go again but it will be in 2024 or 2025. All the best, Sue

Welcome to AH. Congrats on your upcoming safari!

What a surprise! My son and I got out this weekend and did a lot of shooting. We started with the .308 and 7mm-08’s. That went ok and he liked the .308 better. Then he switched over to do some plinking with his .22 using the sticks we just got (what a different feeling that is) while I got out the 300WM. He came over and asked how it kicked. I told him it was nothing compared to the slug guns we use on deer. He shot it and loved it. He was shooting 1” groups off the bench and 2” groups off the sticks at 100yds. It was getting too late to move out to 150/200. We will do that this week. I then mentioned he should try his grandpa’s 7mm RM. we went over to “papa’s” house and he picked it and a few boxes of shells up to try it out this week. Long story short, it was a pleasant surprise to see how well he handled the 300. My concerns over which lighter gun to take may have been unfounded. He said to leave them at home if he liked the 7mm RM like he did the 300. problem solved.
