Good afternoon, I’ve been looking into someday going on safari and taking game that Africa homes, I’ve also been looking into a starter rifle so I can start getting a custom to and learning how to handle and use the rifle correctly. I’ve never fired a Dangerous game rifle, I’ve had lots of experience with a .300 wsm 12ga 3.5 turkey loads which I feel like has a decent amount of recoil, I’ve look at the Winchester model 70 .375 HH and the CZ 550 in the same caliber and the .416 Rigby, I definitely want to ask people in the know about this, also my apologies if this the incorrect place to ask the question.
Thanks in advance

:S Welcome:

Welcome to AH.
Ask all the questions you'd like. There is plenty of knowledge here.

Welcome to AH.

You are in the right place. As we members of AH are encouragers. We like to encourage everyone to: go to, get to, return to Africa; Purchase firearms, preferably in multiples. And we are always willing to offer our advice and share our knowledge (debatable) on how and where to spend your money responsibly ( maybe not so much) so long as it is on hunting gear, hunting equipment, and the sort.

Good day! Welcome to AH!
.375 H&H is the best all rounder for Africa, but there are plenty animals in Africa that you can hunt with a much smaller caliber, like a .308, 30 06 or similar. You don't have to go and buy a new rifle for your first African trip. Most outfitters also have good quality rifles that you can hire and use to hunt with.

Welcome.
You are in the right place to start. Start looking around, there's a lot of information here so take your time. Check it all out and feel free to ask questions.

Welcome to the forum.
In my opinion, take 375 H&H, and you are covered for any type of safari. Plains game and dangerous game.
If going with 416, it is a bit of overkill for plains game.

One rifle to do it all, is 375 H&H, and I believe it will be the general consensus on this forum. In the same time while covering all round safari, you can still use it on northern hemisphere for all kinds of animals wherever you hunt!

Welcome aboard!

+1 to the above.

I went on my first safari in 2019 with the same 30-06 I've hunted North American big game with since 1964. A deal came up for buffalo and I borrowed my PH's 375 (he backed me up with his 458 Lott). Used the same gun to shoot a second buffalo on my next trip. On that safari I also borrowed his souped up 270 WSM for two very long shots at plains game. Other than those two, my old Springfield has accounted for twenry-six plains game. For my safari last year I built a 404 Jeffery ... mostly for the experience of making my own rifle. It hunted buffalo but didn't fire a shot. Building a 404 was slightly less complicated than 375, hence my choice of caliber. 375 may be slightly more versatile. However, I would suggest you take your 300 Win for plains game and borrow a thumper when/if you decide to go after dangerous game. That 300 will take anything else, including eland and roan. Save your money for retrieving your trophies. Getting that stuff back across the pond has become RIDICULOUSLY expensive!

Welcome. Like others have said the 375HH is all around rifle for Africa. Don't rush out and buy one just to go on your first hunt. Your 300wsm will take the plains game without problems. Any good PH and camp will have excellent loaner rifles also. Main thing is go on your first trip. Then start planning many more!

Welcome aboard, the first thing you should do, is to buy the book Safari Dreams, that will help you get information for your trip, then, I would recommend going to either SCI convention, or DSC convention. Good luck

Welcome, get the [emoji[emoji6]][emoji6] H&H you will be ready for anything in Africa. Of the two [emoji[emoji6]][emoji6]’s that you listed get the Winchester it’s ready to hunt. The CZ needs a slight upgrade to be hunt ready, of course if the CZ has already been worked over, then either one.

Welcome welcome welcome

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
