New Guy from Arizona

Welcome to AH.
You have found the two sided sword that is AH.
Tons of information and Tons of information.

Good luck with your planning.

Welcome aboard TucsonFX4. IMHO you are the type of hunter AH can help the most. The biggest thing to remember is that you will more than likely be making a return trip. So, with more than "one bite" at the apple your first hunt doesn't have to fulfill all of your dreams and or expectations. It just needs to whet your appetite. Many first-time hunters take over a year to plan and finalize a hunt. Use the "Search" function to find previous reports on items that interest you.

Please tell us a little more about yourself as a hunter. Things like what have you hunted in the past, what type and caliber rifles you own, do you reload.
You’re right, I fully anticipate returning from my eventual first hunting safari and immediately mentally planning my next one.

I’m not as life-long hunter, as I’ve only gotten into big game hunting the past few years. I appreciate the hunting style in AZ, spot and stalk or beating the brush or whatever term you prefer to use. It isn’t (at least for me) hours in a blind and then going home. I’m not against that and I hope to hunt that style in different states to experience a broader perspective, but I enjoy putting this type of work into it.
I currently have a .308, 7mmRM, and 300WM. My plan for my first hunting safari is to stick to plains game, and believe I would use my 300WM. I am starting to reload and in the process of working up loads for it now. I have a nice collection of bullets, mediocre selection of powder, and only one choice for primer. I sure hope these shortages end soon.

Hello TucsonFX4,

Lets get you to africa for a hunt

ToucsonFX4, you have a good battery of rifles for a first time PG hunt. What weight bullet were you thinking of for PG? Some get to be fairly large, and the 200 Grainers work better if not best on them. Depending on where you hunt, distances can vary greatly, but regardless of the distance, most PH(s) will be expecting you to shoot off "sticks." Believe me that is an acquired skill, start that learning process with a 22 LR or a 17 HMR.

The first load I am working up for the 300WM is with 212 grain Hornady ELD-X, though I’m thinking of switching to the 210 grain Nosler Accubond Long Range. I also have the 180 grain Barnes TTSX that I thought would be a good choice for PG.

I definitely need to get practice with sticks. That is on my short term to do list.

And thank you for the welcomes, Velo and Tally-Ho. I’m looking forward to working with forum sponsors and hopefully picking one for my first trip.

Howdy from Texas

I took my 300 wm and hand loads the first time I went as well with 200 gr bullets. I like your bullet selection and feel your reloading shortage pains!
I love hunting plains game and the variety is awe inspiring. Can’t wait to get back there myself!

Welcome to AH and the posting side! Great to have you here and we are looking forward to you sharing your stories!

Welcome to AH and the posting side! let us know if you have any questions.

Howdy everyone. I’ve been lurking a reading for a couple months, and figured I ought to at least join and be a part of the community. Tons of great knowledge here, such an amazing resource.

Im hoping to be able to go on my first hunting safari next summer or the year after. I’m sure if I were to start the process now, I would have plenty of time to be ready for next year. The problem is, I learn so much every time I get on the website that I don’t want to settle on a hunt and be all booked up only to find something new that I would prefer. On the other hand, I have some concerns about possible changes in regulations when it comes to trophy hunting, whether it be in Africa or the US. I don’t think I need to sweat any of these options or feel pressured one way or the other, it’s just what has been factoring in to my thinking.
I’m looking forward to continuing to learn and research on this site.

Had an excellent classifieds transaction with JoninCO. A truly honest and standup member. I wouldn't hesitate at all to deal with him again. Thanks, J!

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
