There is also alot of pie in the sky. I have a very good friend that has hunted quite a few elephant with me. Started out with 416 then 470 then 500 and now has a 577 and 600. He uses his 600 and he shoots it extremely well! Its a side lock Perugini & Visini it handles like a dream and fits him perfectly. Side brained an elephant and as it was coming down gave it the second barrel! So much for "recovery time". The next elephant was almost quartering on at about 80 yards, last afternoon and couldn't get any closer. He was about to hesitate and said just drill it. He did just that!At the shot I thought he'd missed because the elephant seem didn't react instead sort of shuddered to the shot.. What left like a long time was probably only a moment but the jumbo started to turn slowly and gave him another one. Elephant went 50 yards.. He's first shot hit it just inside the point of the shoulder into the heart.
Another friend of mine with a merkel 500. George's thoughts "Its too far Leon". Before he can murmur - Leon "George just aim where you want to hit and squeeze the trigger!" Bang kudu 130 yards no problem. My point is alot of BS and misconceptions out there!! and course very sage advice;-) Sometimes hard to navigate through it all.
Depends on what you want in a DG DR?
Here they are.
Reliability,,
How the rifle balances, fits and feels?
How is shoots or you shoot it... ?
Can one afford the damn thing!
Probably should add looks in here somewhere;-)
Enjoy the journey in finding the right one. Its a long and satisfying road.
I've settled on a 375, 416, 500J, 460 Weatherby and 577NE! LOL
