Yepper…went and did it. It’s been a bit of gun whirlwind the past few weeks, so sorry for the longer intro.

So I’ve posted a time or two about my interest in the 505 Gibbs, truly more of a lust but possibly a foolish one given I hadn’t ever shot one. While I’ve historically fallen into a clump of friends known to be recoil tolerant if not immune, but everything has its limit and do not expect I’d be any different. For all I knew, first shot I’d chip a tooth or some such catastrophic event, forever ending my whimsical fascination with the cartridge. And I knew myself enough to plan for a custom gun, even if I didn’t mind the recoil, I wouldn’t be happy with it and have to buy another one. Waiting 1-4 years and spending $18k-$32k (Heym with nice wood on the lower end, highly figured walnut and GMA action built by Bolliger or Breeding on the high end) for a rifle I might shoot once and say “nope” to didn’t sound remotely logical, even by my more creative reasonings I sometimes use to talk myself into firearm needs, so I have waited to see if maybe the right gun might come around. Another thing I’m not all that great at.

While waiting, the right gun having not appeared, it did give me a chance to creatively talk myself into buying a Heym 88b in 470, which logically made sense that I should try and sort out if I’m one of those gents who loves .500+ bolt guns, or a more gentlemanly and sophisticated gun enthusiast meant to wield a double. Then while waiting for the 470 to make its way from Heym USA to JJ then to me, I tripped over another 88b in 450/400, which logically I should try to see if in fact I’m cool enough to be a double guy, would I prefer the more delicate proportions and lines of the 450/400. So yes, my creative reasoning while awaiting the right experimental 505 led me into buying not one but two doubles…all while somewhat patiently waiting for the right 505.

So not more than a couple days after picking up the second 88b, having my morning coffee, I did my normal quick internet searches for 505 Gibbs, 500 Jefferey (Not closed minded) and a few Heym and Rigby searches as well…in all the normal places. Lo and behold…what the heck, Cabelas has a 505 Gibbs on a GMA action. Very early gun, and they are calling it a GMA built gun. Cooler yet, it’s a more all weather build, which for me in Alaska, is awesome. It’s durable and ugly enough to use here for moose and big brownies. I correspond with the location and ask a number of questions since I was not aware of GMA ever making a full rifle themselves. The Library responded back that they were unsure, had spoken to GMA and learned nothing from the current owner, but had gotten Mike Roden’s number from him and left a message, never hearing back. While it looked well built in the few small small images online, I remain fearful of unknown built guns, especially expensive ones. While their price wasn’t bad, less than I’d seen a GMA action based rifle listed for in quite some time, still spooked me if I decided to sell it in a week, month, 5 years. No one loves not knowing who made it. So I made an admittedly low ball offer, with clear admission that I’d happily be closer to what they were asking if I knew the maker, and maybe even the asking price depending on who that maker was. Skip forward a few days as the person I spoke to had to try to research a bit more and then talk to the “main” manager gent. They got back to me with a counter that was close to my offer and accepted. Awesome, now the proud owner of a gun I may like…and this is where my luck really changed for the better I feel.

So while waiting to hear back, I was looking over Ryan Breedings website, drooling over his projects pages and the gorgeous rifles he’s spun up for folks over the years, when I all the sudden see a rifle that doesn’t just look strikingly similar, but the spitting image. I had corresponded with Ryan’s wife a bit in the past about building a 505, so hoped she wouldn’t find me a pest asking if I could send some details and photos to inquire if Ryan had built the rifle since it did not have Breeding inscribed anywhere above the stock line. It took a day, and by then I’d already bought the rifle, but she called me up and said Ryan would happily look at whatever photos and with that and if anything the serial he could verify if his. She called me back within 5 minutes of receiving the photos confirming Ryan built the gun, recognized right off but verified by serial number and had built it for Mark Buchanan who was doing Big Bore Productions videos at the time, like Death by Double and others. He had the rifle built to take to the Arctic for Polar bear which he did, and used the rifle in his Death in the Arctic video. Which now I have to order a copy of that to watch it, albeit the rifle is in the YouTube trailer.

Ryan then called me right after I returned from a sheep hunt several days ago and picked up the rifle, just to run through the specifics of the gun. He originally told me he did not have notes on what barrel blank the integral barrel was milled from since it came from GMA with the action. He chambered it and built the stock and finished the rifle, but the barrel was milled by GMA. He thought Mike Roden would respond if I just sent him a text, which he promptly did. The barrel is milled from a Kreiger blank.

Now it’s just getting things together to load up some ammo to really have fun. I somehow was lucky enough to find a single box of 10 CZ Safari Classics ammo in Wasilla Alaska of all places, so couldn’t help but stop and run two off-hand rounds through it. First shot I was admittedly more nervous than I’ve been wondering what to expect. The CZ rounds are 525 TSX at 2200fps, which I understood was on the mild end…proved true. Total pussycat load, just a nice big soft shove with this 11.5lb boomer.

Smitten so far. Now just need to sort loads. Ryan said the load he worked up for the gun was with H4831 (Not the sc), which I can’t find, but have around 15lbs of the SC and various RL, 4350 and H1000, so we’ll see.

With every pic, the rifle looks even better! Well done on the find!

One of the first 100, I have one in 416 rigby in the 90’s serial number. When a guy sees a GMA rifle with less than 100 serial number, the actions only went to the top makers at that time, if it’s priced right, buy it, it will be one of the best rifles you’ll ever own.

Congrats, you have a rifle for every big game adventure. The perfect scope for that 505 is the Schmidt & Bender zenith 1-4

Nice to hear…that’s the exact scope I am hoping to put on it.

You fell in a fresh cow patty face first and came up with a gold piece stuck between your teeth.

Ryan is one of the best custom builder in the country!!!

Enjoy all three of your new acquisitions!

Thanks gents. Admit a feeling of gratitude on my luck the past few weeks.

At least on firearms. Sheep season had a bit of a shakey start with two other groups finding their way into the spot I e hunted the past several seasons. It’s an open area, so anyone has as much right as we do, it’s just such a butt whoopin to get to even if you have a buddy with a cub, just hadn’t happened since 2019 while we were there and only once even after we left. This year had a guy decide he was going full Mr. Sniperson on a ram we’d slept on overnight and had difficulty relocating in the early morning hours. As we came down a ridgeline to check the other side, two guys walked up saying we were F’n up their sh*t. They’d arrived the night before and watched the rams bed, planned to go up that morning. Think they initially thought we’d just arrived and kind of corked them off, but I’d watched and videoed the band of rams for over 2-days. Like them, we were tucked away out of sight of the rams, and each other.

Just before we reached the guys walking up to us, I saw the ram step out where he was previously hidden before and let the gents know we were climbing back up to get above. He said hold on, that’s a legal ram at 580 yards, I can make that shot all day and if you aren’t shooting him from here, I am. Never asked if I could, which I could, but didn’t want to. In less than 7-10min, totally hidden, could have had the ram at under 200 yards, so no need.

Nevertheless, he quickly dropped his pack, got set up, his buddy spotting, check his phone for drop, and squeezed off a round. Shooting that magnificent Ram square in the ass. Worst 5min hunting of my life. Worst morning I think. Guy ultimately got the ram after much side hilling, climbing, and 4 more shots, with recovery up in the cliffs.

We even had two more legal rams, his buddies, come out onto an outcropping above us just under 400yards and I passed on the them both. Could have stalked around and closed the distance to 150-200 yards, but all I wanted was out of there and off to different country from that guy. His buddy was actually nice and seemed apologetic for the guys comments and behaviors. Especially once he realized we’d been there for a day before they even started hiking in…shouldn’t jump to assumptions. On our climb down and back to camp found two more guys were below with spotting scope, hunting the same area. It’s a small spot too, so we packed up and hit the glaciers for a new camp.

Rest of the trip was great. Hard hiking, climbing in some gorgeous, new country, passed on another two rams that needed more age and came out a couple days early.

So my luck hasn’t proven well rounded, just on guns, which I’ll take it. Better than bad luck all around.

Sir, I will gladly take that 16 gauge off your hands. I was waiting for your Winchesters but I'm a sucker for a 16 ga.

I bought a great deal of the brass he had for sale, plus I already had many hundred rounds.

How much brass are you looking for?
