New 458 Win Mag, my first

How is that scope height with the hogsback stock? Are you having to resort to a chin-weld?

I can get a fairly decent cheek weld although I admit it’s a little higher than I’d like. One thing I’ve kicked around is swapping to a Recknagel safety and that would allow me to drop the scope height almost a centimeter. It would not be cheap but I really do love how the rifle fits me. Shoots like a 12ga shotgun with the iron sights.

If the mounting is not intuitive and that is to be a DG rifle, the cost to get the scope to a proper comfortable and natural height is peanuts, to the potential issues caused by the awkwardness of a poorly fitted scope. I woud go ahead and do whatever it takes to make it right. Good luck.

Yes, this will be “it” for me for a DG rifle. It fits like an absolute glove with the iron sights and shoots really well. To be honest, I have great vision and will probably take my shots with the irons in most cases. The scope is a little high because of the flag safety. I can remedy that with a Recknagel 3-position safety and I think that’s what I will do. I can drop significantly lower on the scope rings after that.

That's a beautiful rifle. I have a newer sbs action pro hunter and a m40 pistol. Have had several steyrs over the years I'm a really big fan of the butter knife bolt handles. And the fact it's in a dangerous game caliber. Wow, nice gun

The scope as low as you can was not for comfort. It was thought to give you a better shot being closer and more parallel to the barrel.

Turns out that’s not true. Often a taller scope is more comfortable, and in turn gives better site picture and more repeatable shots.

If scope is comfortable and site is there with a closed eye shouldering of weapon, use it! Most say lower scope just because they think it looks better

That is not the case... when you bring the rifle up and properly anchor it to your shoulder and under the cheekbone, your eye usually aligns 1 1/4" - 1 3/4" above the bore, depending on your technique and build... people that say the higher scope is more comfortable are generally not properly anchored and have a full or partial chin weld. If you watch video of experienced hunters or PH's in dangerous shooting scenarios, they have a hunched look to them... that is a pro "becoming the bullet"... willing the bullet to the target, when it REALLY needs to hit the target. This is not the same as sitting tall at the range bench with your neck vertical and your chin on the comb. The other reason for a lower scope is that your bullet at close range starts closer to your line of sight... as in, you won't shoot low when the target is between your legs... also, high scope mounters often then zero for MPBR or @ 200, which exacerbates the issues. However as I indicated earlier, comfort and natural fit should be paramount over trajectory versus line of sight, which is why I asked about comfort and weld position.

I doubt you are interested in any trades but I was getting ready to list a Sauer 404 3 barrel set in the 10-12 price range if your interested. It has the 404J, 30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Only the 30-06 had been shot and it has 7 rounds through it as I was working on breaking the barrel in. It also has both the synthetic thumbhole stock and somewhere between grade 3-5 non thumbhole stock
